FPCI Calls for Climate Change Talks Among 2024 Presidential Candidates

June 22, 2023 | 12:21 pm

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Founder, and chairperson of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Dino Patti Djalal, contended that the aspect of climate change must be incorporated into Indonesia’s development strategy, which also includes whoever will run for the country’s presidency in the 2024 election.

“Whoever runs as a presidential candidate in the 2024 General Election (Pemilu),” said Dino in the Net Zero Summit 2023 press briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 21.

Dino gave an environmental policy example adopted by European countries in protecting the climate through legal policies. He implied that those who do not align with the government’s net-zero policy will be deemed in violation of the Law.

“This country already established a goal. But it’s still too loose,” said Dino implying the lack of specific policies and strategies.

He added to his argument that talking about policies to tackle climate change is what the younger generation yearns for. “This is what the younger generation, or net-zero generation, wants,” he asserted.

The Net-Zero Summit (INZS) 2023 will be held on Saturday, June 24, which is an annual climate conference to inclusively discuss climate change issues as a collective among state officials, diplomats, activists, musicians, celebrities, youths, and civilians.

It will mark the second time the event is held and is touted to be the largest climate change forum in Indonesia. The inaugural event was held during the pandemic last year. “We will mainly encourage the public, and specifically the government to get out of your comfort zone,” he elaborated.
