Matija Hedl, PhD, of Department of Medicine, Dies

November 01, 2018

The School of Medicine has learned of the recent passing of Matija Hedl, PhD, a faculty member in the Department of Medicine.

Early in his career and prior to coming to Yale, Dr. Hedl studied biochemistry pathways regulating essential functions in bacteria. Dr. Hedl was recruited to Yale approximately 11 years ago. During this time, he made important contributions to our understanding of the manner in which genes associated with inflammatory bowel disease contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease.

Together with Clara Abraham, MD, professor of internal medicine (digestive diseases), he defined the role of numerous innate immune system genes in modifying intestinal immunity. His functional analyses of genetic associations defined new avenues and approaches for therapeutic targeting.

Dr. Hedl is remembered as a fine colleague, friend, and lover of music, and as a kind, generous, and compassionate human being.
