4 September 1867 by members of the Wednesday Cricket Club.
5th oldest professional football club in England.

PROFESSIONALISM
Adopted in April 1887 after 20 years as an amateur club. The first wages were 5 shillings (25p) for home games and 7 shillings 6 pennies (37½p) for away games.

WHY WEDNESDAY?
In 1820 the founders of Wednesday Cricket Club were local craftsmen whose weekly half day off was Wednesday. Wednesday Cricket Club was subsequently disbanded in September 1924. The Club was simply known as "Wednesday" or "The Wednesday" until in June 1929 our name was officially changed to Sheffield Wednesday.

NICKNAME
"The Owls" - we are located in an area of Sheffield used to be known as Owlerton.

CLUB MOTTO
'Consilio et Animis' (By Wisdom and Courage).

COLOURS
Blue and white. Traditionally stripes, although we have played in squares and hoops and had a spell in the late 60's/early 70's when we wore blue shirts with white sleeves.
