A fund has been established for the family of Syed Saleem Shahzad - his wife
Anita, two sons aged 14 and seven, and daughter aged 12. Asia Times Online's
Pakistan bureau chief was murdered last week. These are the details of the bank

Asia Times Online appealed to its readers to contribute to the family of Syed
Saleem Shahzad - his wife Anita, two sons aged 14 and seven, and daughter aged
12 - following his killing last month. Shahzad had served as Asia Times
Online's Pakistan bureau chief for more than 10 years. Readers were requested
to make donations via bank transfer or via PayPal.
Many readers chose to use PayPal to transfer to an account specially set up by
Asia Times Online, and from June 13 the system worked smoothly. However, on
June 18, Asia Times Online received the following e-mail from PayPal: We
appreciate your interest in PayPal. However, due to legal and regulatory
constraints, PayPal Private Limited is unable to process payments for
non-registered charities and non-profit organizations (NPOs); political
party/organizations; religious institutions; personal/organizational
fundraisers, etc in countries under its jurisdiction.
This is not a decision we make lightly, and we deeply regret any inconvenience
or frustration this matter may cause you. Please understand that this decision
is final.
The PayPal account set up by Asia Times Online to facilitate the transfer of
money to Shahzad's family was as a result frozen in that Asia Times Online was
denied access to forward money to Shahzad's family.
Asia Times Online was left with no option but to refund the majority of the
money sent to the PayPal account; the remainder will be refunded as soon as
technically possible.
Refunded readers and others can still make donations to the bank account above.
