The Ashikaga clan (足利あしかが氏し, Ashikaga-shi) was a prominent Japanese samurai clan which established the Muromachi shogunate and ruled Japan from roughly 1336 to 1573. During the Muromachi period it had a Kansai and a Kantō branch (the Kantō Ashikaga-ke (関東かんとう足利あしかが家か), from which stemmed the various rulers called kubō (Kantō Kubō and Koga Kubō) of the area).
