Editorial Reviews

Review

"Get a copy of this little gem of a booklet and see if it can help you to improve the amount of happiness you experience. You don't have to live your future in the shadow of your old beliefs, especially if they no longer serve you and are making you unhappy." - The Galveston County Daily News

From the Author

I wrote A Guide to Shameless Happiness to give readers a brief but comprehensive introduction to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) which was created by the pioneering psychologist, Dr Albert Ellis, in the 1950s.

My goal in writing the book was to show you in an easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to remember way that you don't have to be stressed, miserable, or pessimistic. It's possible to take control of your life - and your happiness.

Changing negative thoughts and overcoming unhelpful emotions including depression, anger, shame, jealousy, and anxiety isn't easy - but it is possible.
A Guide to Shameless Happiness shows you how.

There's nothing I enjoy more than teaching people how to enjoy Shameless Happiness by using the self-help techniques of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Please note that I'm not a therapist. I taught myself how to use REBT. When Albert Ellis created REBT in the 1950's, he created one of the first self-help therapies. Many people can teach themselves REBT as I did, but some people need extra help. That's what I do: I tutor people who want extra help.

Over the years, I've created a number of self-help tools and written a number of articles designed to help people help themselves with REBT. I also work privately, one-on-one, with those who request it, helping them to remain focused and master the techniques and philosophy so that they can overcome their problems, reach their goals, and lead a rewarding and joyous life. I tutor people via email, phone, or over Skype.

(That's a photo of me with Albert Ellis taken in 2006).

"A Guide to Shameless Happiness" is a book I recommend both as a starting point for readers who are not cognizant of the basics of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and old hands who want a refresher to refocus on truly become unabashedly happy. Besides explaining the basic philosophy and techniques of REBT the author frames our existence in this world in terms that are easily understood. He reminds us that Life is a vacation from our normal state of non-being and urges us to seize the day--enjoy life to the fullest. His various lists provide us with pragmatic understanding and provide us with actions we can take to be more happiness embracing.

Some reframing and definitions are taken straight from REBT others, to the best of my knowledge, originated with the author and still others are a synthesis of the two. There are such gems as a) you don't have to prove yourself to others or self--just pursue happiness (in ways he lists) and b) willpower is best visualized as being a series of actions we take not as a characteristic we have or don't have. I recommend this book because it refocused my mind on the enjoyment of life and gives specific suggestions how to gain more happiness. Above all the book avoids psychological jargon and complicated explanations that are frequently only half true.

Personally I would recommend that the author leave a note on how he can be contacted. The note could be added as a response to this review. Why? Because I believe he can do good coaching via the internet, especially using Skype.

I, the reviewer, am a licensed psychologist practicing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and use many of the techniques described in the book. I know Mr. Ross by being on an online forum for REBT clients and practitioners. I have been impressed all along with his contributions.

A great sum-up of the original doctor's theory. I disagreed with just one thing: the view that this life is all there is. But overall, this was an extremely helpful and fresh perspective.

We come into this world happy, eager and full of wonder. Some of spend our adult life learning how to be unhappy. Stop. Be happy!

Arrived on time, was well packaged, and it's a cute little book. This is a very brief into to "happiness" according to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Easily read in one sitting, I imagine this being available in a waiting room. If you're looking for anything other than what you can find nearly all-together in one internet page when searching "REBT" in google, I would recommend a different book.

Will Ross wrote this book to help the reader gain self-mastery which entails getting comfortable with a rational approach to living. His presentation of Dr. Albert Ellis' groundbreaking Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is useful to anyone who takes the time to apply the principles therein. This short work was beneficial to me even though my spiritual background led me to different (tentative) conclusions about the prospect of an afterlife and the nature of human destiny. The main point is that it works here and now no matter where you find yourself. Try it and see!

A very well done straight forward approach to happiness that I think most of us can apply to our daily lives. The 4 stars was because I felt there's more meat on the bones of this approach to happiness than is outlined in this book. What I mean but that is that most of us have so many unconscious / subconscious motivations behind our approach to our daily lives that we are often not even aware why we have unrealistic expectations. I felt the book was a little simple in it's approach and that's not a bad thing, I was just looking for a little more depth.

I liked this little book as it says very simply what you can easily do to change your thinking and become more happy. I recommend this book to every person that is interested in changing his life for the better.

The title is sappy, and I almost passed on this book. Luckily, I knew a little about REBT (rational emotive behavioral therapy) and a friend recommended I give Dr Ross' book a try. I am glad I did. He gave me a technique that works to avoid being in a funk over relatively minor issues. Americans like "solutions" to problems, and this is the most understandable discussion about how to solve the problem of overreacting to what life throws at us. Thanks Dr Ross.

A quick overview of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as developed by Albert Ellis to help overcome unhealthy negative emotions and self-defeating behaviors which undermine one's happiness. A very simple framework (A, B, C, D & E): A = something happens, B = your beliefs / assumptions / attitudes, C = your emotional reaction (i.e. anger, fear, sadness, depression, shame, envy etc.), D = Challenge your beliefs (what is your proof?), E = There is no proof. Invariably our beliefs either exaggerate or make unreasonable demands and once you challenge these then you undermine B and therefore your emotional reaction dissipates without having to try reprogram your responses in futility. I've found myself using this in such situations which raise emotive responses and surprisingly they seem to melt away. I liked this book for the concise quick to read/comprehend theory, but preferred the 3 Minute Therapy by Dr. Michael Edelstein for the detailed examples and many real examples of the REBT system in action. Truth is the 2 books complement each other well.

A nice read on the fundamentals of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as propounded by Albert Ellis. However, REBT is not just about principles, but also about practice. This book could have used more examples on how to practice REBT.
