FPU's Lewis selected in NBA D-League draft for second straight year

NBA D-League Draft Results

Former Fresno Pacific All-American guard James Lewis heard his named called in the NBA's Development League draft for the second straight year on Monday night, being picked up by the Austin Toros, the affiliate team for the San Antonio Spurs, in the 8th round.

Lewis was selected in the fifth round of the D-League draft last year by the Maine Red Claws, but ended up playing professionally overseas in Finland where he averaged more than 20 points per game.

He will report to the Toros on Thursday and break camp with the team, looking to earn a roster spot. Some of the players joining Lewis in an attempt to make the team include former college players Justin Dentmon (Washington), Tristan Thompson (North Texas), Lance Thomas (Duke) and Luke Zeller (Notre Dame).

Lewis, a two-time NAIA All-American, was the leading scorer on two national tournament teams for the Sunbirds. He averaged 17.5 points per game as a senior and was among the nation's leaders in three-pointers and free-throw percentage. As a junior he was named GSAC Player of the Year after leading FPU to a conference championship.

Also selected in Monday night's draft was former GSAC Player of the Year Justin Johnson of Concordia (3rd round, Dakota Wizards).

The NBDL, formed in 2001 to create an official minor league system for the NBA, consists of 16 teams, each with at least one NBA affiliate. At the end of last season, more than 20 percent of NBA players had spent time in the D-League.
