While Robinson is nine years Friedel's junior, the American veteran was a far more consistent performer last season.
Robinson did play in Tottenham's Carling Cup win over Chelsea last season but was dogged by poor form and his place was constantly under threat from Radek Cerny.
A January horror show against Reading was the last straw in a series of below-par performances and led to Ramos dropping Robinson in favour of Cerny for 10 matches.
Robinson joined the north London club for £1.5m in May 2004 and his England debut followed in June of the same year.
He was first-choice keeper at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and kept four clean sheets as England were knocked out at the quarter-final stage.
However, doubts surfaced about his international future when a Gary Neville back-pass bobbled over his foot and into the net in a 2-0 defeat by Croatia.
He was replaced by Villa's Scott Carson for a friendly with Austria last November before being omitted for the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at Wembley.
Ince would like to add to his squad before the start of the new campaign but will be equally focused on ensuring the likes of David Bentley and Roque Santa Cruz do not follow Friedel out of the club.
