Roe: I was sacked
Peter Roe
Wakefield won only three times under Roe
Former Wakefield coach Peter Roe says he was sacked by the Super League strugglers.

The club announced on Monday that the former Featherstone boss had decided to leave immediately after being told his contract was not being renewed for next season.

But Roe insists that he did not jump ship, telling The Guardian: "There's no way I would have resigned. I was prepared to see it through.

"I'm not a quitter and I still believed we would escape relegation.

"It's come as a big shock. When you are at the bottom of the table you know it's not pleasing for people, but I thought we had done enough to give them hope.

"However, some people obviously thought differently."

Roe, who took over following John Harbin's decision to step down at the end of the last season, leaves the club bottom of the Super League table.

The Wildcats avoided relegation only on the final day of last season, but Roe failed to reverse their fortunes and oversaw only three wins during his reign.

Roe's relations with the club did however become strained following the decision to sell key players Ben Westwood and Nathan Wood to relegation rivals Warrington.

Roe added: "I was told my contract wasn't being renewed and was also told it would be fairer for myself and the club if I was released immediately.

"It was a stomach-churning experience. I had no inkling this was going to happen."

Trinity hope to announce a successor within the next few days.

Chief executive Diane Rogerson said on Monday: "We would like to thank Peter for the hard work and commitment he has shown to the club during his time with us and wish him every success in the future.

"His behaviour both as a person and as a coach has been exemplary and we wish him well."
