England v Germany - a rivalry of two halves

Nicknamed 'Das Supertalent', the prodigiously gifted Sebastian Deisler represents, by most accounts, the future of German football. He carries many Germany's hopes on Saturday.

In what has been a particularly barren period for youth players in Germany, Deisler has stood out as a shining exception. When his hometown club Borussia Monchengladbatch were relegated in 1999, Deisler was courted by no less than 26 clubs. Since his arrival at Hertha Berlin, plaudits have rained down down from the upper echelons of German football. The 21 year old midfielder is described by Beckenbauer as "physically and technically the best in Germany", whilst national coach Voller claims he will be "influential for Germany for another ten years".

On paper, Deisler's record is not as impressive as the hype may suggest. He has played only 65 games in his four years in the Bundesliga, whilst at international level he has won thirteen caps. But Deisler's creativity and versatility has made him a revelation in that short period.

Originally playing his football as a right winger, he terrorised opponents with his determination, quick feet and pin point crosses. His performances in the Champions League helped push inexperienced Hertha into the 2nd round of qualification last season, including some particularly impressive victories against Chelsea and AC Milan.

Internationally, Deisler has proved just as adept. He had a quiet game at Wembley but has dominated in other qualifiers. Against Albania and Greece, Deisler was deployed in a more central role as a creative midfielder, a role which he has filled with aplomb. Having scored with a thunderous 25-yard drive against Albania, Deisler was sent off. Voller put this down to his inexperience but said "He has apologised and I forgive him because he had a cracking game up to that point".

Deisler now looks to have assured his role as Germany's playmaker, and England will certainly need to be wary. With speed, dribbling skills, precision passing and a vicious long-range shot, Deisler is developing into a truly world class player. If Germany play defensively on Saturday, he may not get the chance to demonstrate his talents to the full. But let Sol Campbell be warned - he is the man to watch on the break.
