Watch Replay: Wreath-Laying Ceremony for Presidential Inauguration 2017

The wreath-laying ceremony Thursday afternoon was the first official event kicking off the presidential inauguration of Donald J. Trump.

ARLINGTON, VA — A wreath-laying ceremony Thursday afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery kicked off the official inaugural events for President-elect Donald Trump. Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence presented the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in honor of the nation’s fallen soldiers.

The ceremony was at the cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, the final resting place for 400,000 military heroes, President Kennedy and others buried there since the 1860s. More than 4 million people visit the cemetery annually. Burial in Arlington is generally limited to active, retired and former members of the armed forces, Medal of Honor recipients, high-ranking federal government officials and their dependents.

Important to note if you are visiting Arlington Cemetery on Thursday: The Arlington Memorial Bridge that links the cemetery to the Lincoln Memorial will not be accessible to vehicles or pedestrians. The access should reopen for pedestrians following the concert event at the Lincoln Memorial, likely opening around 7 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

Before it became a cemetery, the Arlington estate was owned by George Washington Parke Custis, adopted grandson of George Washington. His daughter Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who married Robert E. Lee, inherited the estate. It was abandoned by the Lees during the Civil War and used as headquarters for the Union army. Arlington House (also known as Custis-Lee Mansion) which sits atop a hill at the site with sweeping views of the area, is currently a memorial for Robert E. Lee and run by the National Park Service.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is a monument dedicated to American service members who have died without their remains being identified.

The wreath-laying Thursday afternoon will be followed by a "Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration" concert at the Lincoln Memorial.

Trump will be sworn-in Friday at noon as the 45th president of the United States at the U.S. Capitol before he participates in the Inaugural Parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.
