History

History:‘…the monument which is to be erected in the Steine Gardens…the centre-piece is in the form of an altar stone, which will bear suitable inscriptions. This is connected by a short colonnade with pergolas, each composed of four columns upholding a roof. The monument is shown reflected in the water of the pool which is to be formed in front. The pool will be surrounded with a stone edging, decorated with urns. The picture also indicates the steps, whereon wreaths may be placed. The erection of this memorial involves the removal of the statue of George IV to a site to be chosen in the Royal Pavilion.
(Brighton Herald Saturday October 15 1921)

The memorial was unveiled by Earl Beatty and contains the names of 2,597 men and 3 women from Brighton who lost their lives in the First World War. It was designed in the form of a Roman Water Garden.

The water represents the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy and the memorial gardens represent the British Army and Royal Air Force.
