this site, new seville, uniquely represents the encounter between the amerindian, the european and the african, in jamaice. it was here also that christopher columbus and his son fernando, found refuge when they were marooned at santa gloria (st. ann's bay) from june 1503 to june 1504. the confluence of cultures on this site was to alter the course of jamaica's history. this plaque was laid by federico mayor, director general of unesco on september 8, 1991, international literacy day, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of this encounter.

Seville Great House provides a journey through the centuries to the very beginnings of Jamaica's history. Artifacts from the excavated colony of Sevilla La Nueva (New Seville) that was founded in 1509 by Columbus's son are on display. A statue of Columbus cast in Genoa is on-site.
