The SOS Children’s Villages-USA charity has seen a wave of interest since the death of Johnny Cash. The organization, which provides homes for at-risk children around the world, was named by the Cash family as a suitable outlet for donations in his memory. Donations can be made through the SOS Web site or by calling 888-SOS-4-KIDS.
“On behalf of our children & staff in our more than 400 villages around the world, we wish to express our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Cash,” SOS-USA executive director Christopher Zappia says in a statement. “We are deeply honored to be the charity the family has named in this great man’s memory.”
As previously reported, Cash died Sept. 12 of respiratory failure brought on by complications of diabetes. He was 71. A private funeral service was held yesterday (Sept. 15) in Hendersonville, Tenn.; plans for a public memorial have not yet been announced.
Cash and his late wife, June Carter Cash, first became involved with SOS in 1973, when they donated $12,000 for a building that now houses orphaned children in the organization’s Jamaican village. The entertainers frequently visited the village when staying at their home in Jamaica.
In other news, some of Johnny and June’s appearances on a classic country music radio show will be released Sept. 23 on CD via Scena Records. Captured at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium between 1955 and 1963, “Johnny Cash – Live Recordings from the Louisiana Hayride” will include his performances of “Hey Porter,” “Luther Played the Boogie,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” “Big River” and “Rock Island Line,” among others.
The songs on “June Carter – Live Recordings From the Louisiana Hayride” were captured between 1960 and 1965. She’s backed by such musicians as Jerry Kennedy on guitar, as well as the Wilburn Brothers. Two songs feature Cash and the Statler Brothers, with whom she was touring in 1965.
On Sept. 30, White Star Video will release “The Highwaymen: On the Road Again.” Featuring Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, the DVD/VHS release spotlights the supergroup on its first European tour in the late 1980s. The hour-long program boasts backstage and performance footage.
