Attorney General George Jepsen, one of the state’s most prominent Democrats, is endorsing his old friend, Ned Lamont, for governor.

“He’s never been afraid to stand up and do the right thing for the right reason,’’ Jepsen told reporters at a morning press conference at the state Capitol.

Lamont “will make the hard decisions that need to be made in this state even at the risk of sacrificing his future political career,” Jepsen added.

Jepsen and Lamont have known each other for decades. In the 2006 U.S. Senate campaign, Jepsen was among the first influential Democrats to back Lamont’s insurgent effort to knock off Joe Lieberman, proving the then-largely unknown Lamont with a high-profile boost.

Lamont expressed gratitude to Jepsen and said his backing will help counter the well-funded political attacks Democrats will face from the Republican Governors Association. “ At the end of the day, the Republican Governors Association will be pouring money in,’’ he said. “They’re ready to see if they can turn this state red and we’re not going to let it happen.”

Democrats will chose a gubernatorial nominee at the party’s convention in May. Jepsen, who is not seeking reelection, is the first high-profile Democrat to endorse a candidate for governor.
