MTV has launched an award system designed to highlight those videos receiving the most play across its global network of music video channels.
Data from 38 of MTV's global channels, ranging from MTV Flux in the UK to MTV Australia, about the videos played between February 1 and June 30 has been compiled to create a list of "platinum" and "gold" videos. To obtain a platinum award, the video must have been played over 6000 times; for a gold one, a video needs over 3000 plays.
"We are delighted to introduce these awards," said Jamie Caring, senior vice president of talent and music at MTV International. "It is appropriate that this exciting new initiative comes from MTV, the original pioneers of music video broadcasting."
The most-played video during the period was Gwen Stefani's 'Sweet Escape', with 11,000 plays; in second place was Nelly Furtado with 'All Good Things Come To An End'.
"MTV's growing roster of International music based channels (78 at last count) represents one of the globe's biggest TV networks," explained Caring. "Our MTV, VH1, TMF and VIVA services across the world have music videos and artist led content as their backbone, generating thousands of music hours reaching millions of viewers. We thought the videos that had made most impact on our channels and on our viewers across the board, generating the most air time and the best reaction from audiences needed celebrating in some way... official recognition for staggering numbers of plays!"
