10/06/2024 News to read United States wins FIBA U18 AmeriCup for 7th consecutive time BUENOS AIRES (Argentina) – United States confirmed their status as favorites, routing host country Argentina by 110-70 on Sunday at Estadio Obras Sanitarias to win the FIBA U18 AmeriCup 2024. This was their 7thconsecutive crown in the category and 11th title in the history of the event. Argentina won their 5th silver medal. Canada finished 3rd after defeating Dominican Republic (89-67) to win bronze. Point guard Darius Acuff Jr. led the American cause with 26 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals for an efficiency of 37 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Jasper Johnson also shined for Thomas Lloyd’s squad with 19 points (4 three-pointers) off the bench, while Daniel Jacobsen (7 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Nikolas Khamenia (8 boards) scored 11 points apiece. Christopher Brown had 9 assists and along with Acuff Jr. commanded an unstoppable offense. Argentina was down by a point (24-23) at the end of the first period and even led 30-28 four minutes into the second period, but what came after was a true American avalanche. United States ramped up their defense, started generating steals and running the floor – uncorking an 18-0 run to go up 46-30. They went into halftime with a 52-36 lead. The third quarter brought more of the same, with the U.S. squad executing their game plan to perfection and extending the lead. A 37-14 quarter put them up 89-50 and essentially sealed the deal. Kropp was Argentina’s best player once again, finishing with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Matías Pikaluk added 13 points. Bruno Farías (8 assists) and Joaquín Folmer contributed 9 points each.
