This is a short but comprehensive guide to Dutch grammar. It answers all the grammatical questions that any beginning or intermediate English-speaking student of Dutch is likely to have. The book is clearly organized by topic, and individual topics can be found easily via the table of contents and/or the index. It also contains a helpful glossary of grammatical terms, which briefly reviews essential grammatical concepts in English and compares them to Dutch usage. I expect to continue using this book as a reference as I try to learn and improve my Dutch.

This is a succinct and reasonably readable Dutch grammar that covers all the major areas required without getting too bogged down into intricate details. It is a grammar, not an workbook, so there are examples but no test questions. that is fine.

I would perhaps have liked a little more structure to the rules however. The author appears to have deliberately attempted to make the book readable by laying out the rules in paragraphs, albeit divided into some chapters and with some levels of sub heading. That works well, but time will tell whether I am able to quickly look up a rule I vaguely remember but need the explanation for.

Also some grammars go into more detail about how the grammar developed. That can add interest although at the expense of clarity, so this author chose the clarity - keep everything short and simple. Depending on what you want from a grammar, that may or may not be a good choice.

All in all a useful addition to my Dutch reference materials but hardly riveting reading!

Two Dutch Lessons

Lesson 1: Negation
6 rules are offered regarding negation.
(1) Simple sentences are negated with "niet" (not) at the end.
Ik ken de eend niet.
(i know the duck not)
I don't know the duck.
(2) "Niet" should come before any predicate adjectives.
Die eend is niet eng.
(that duck is not scary)
That duck isn't scary.
(3) "Niet" should precede any element of the sentence that it specifically negates.
Ik wil de eend niet meer zien.
(i want the duck not more to-see)
I don't want to see the duck anymore.
(4) Sentences ending in infinitives, past participles, or separable verb prefixes should have "niet" directly before these elements.
Gaat deze eend niet weg?
(goes this duck not away)
Won't this duck leave?
(5) "Niet" should be placed before the verb form(s) at the end of a dependent clause.

This straightforward and practical Dutch grammar book is truly one of a kind. It is indeed "designed for the adult with limited learning time whose objective is broader, more fluent everyday communication." And it does not fail to deliver! I managed to improve my understanding of this highly interesting language for professional reasons by a great deal. The book draws comparisons between English and Dutch as they both are West Germanic languages and do share some grammar up to a certain degree. In short, I truly recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick introduction to this wonderful language.

Es un libro decente para introducirse en la gramática neerlandesa. Algunos typos y errores bastante graves, pero supongo (no hay info al respecto) que el autor a) es americano y/o b) no es nativo neerlandés. Corto y conciso.

Es un una lectura complementaria o paralela a aquellos que están tomando clases de holandés. Mayormente la uso para repasar alguna gramática que quiero refrescar del curso que estoy tomando o buscando una explicación diferente a la que me ha dado el profesor.

Not exactly a classic page-turner, but if you want to learn about Dutch grammar then this is the book for it. I'll be honest and say it's not a particularly entertaining or thrilling read but it does comprehensively every necessary facet of Dutch grammar for those looking to learn the language.

This book is amazingly clear. I haven’t learned hardly any vocabulary yet but wanted an overview of the grammatical structure, and I was still able to understand the basics of what was being discussed for every. A perfect little reference
