Athletes entered for the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 have, between them, amassed 32 medals from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and 34 medals from the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
The final entry lists confirm that 734 athletes (411 men and 323 women) from 43 federations have been entered for the global event in China.

Olympic 200m champion and world athlete of the year Letsile Tebogo is among the star names. All four members of Canada&rsquo;s gold medal-winning 4x100m team from the Paris Olympics are also entered, as is multiple world and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, her fellow Jamaican and two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson, world 800m champion Mary Moraa of Kenya and world 400m record-holder Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa.

Following the decision last month to move the 2025 World Athletics Road Running Championships from San Diego, World Athletics has held discussions with a number of alternative hosts, some with great potential.
While some of these discussions will continue for other editions of the event, the World Athletics Council has decided not to award the Championships to an alternative host this year due to lack of essential planning and preparation time required to cater for both elite and mass participation race elements.
The focus instead will be on next year&rsquo;s World Road Running Championships which will be held in Copenhagen from 19-20 September 2026 and is shaping up to be a great event. Already 100,000 people have shown interest in the 35,000 spots available for the half marathon distance. For those still wanting to participate in the mile and 5km, please check out the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-road-running-championships/copenhagen26" target="_blank" rel="noopener">event website</a>.

2025 edition of World Road Running Championships cancelled

From Alexander Mutiso Munyao&rsquo;s title defence, Eliud Kipchoge&rsquo;s return and Jacob Kiplimo&rsquo;s debut to Tigist Assefa&rsquo;s clash with Sifan Hassan and the late addition of Vivian Cheruiyot &ndash; the TCS London Marathon on Sunday (27) is stacked with stars and storylines.
Many of the biggest names in marathon running will be racing in the World Athletics Platinum Label event this weekend, including six men with sub-2:04 PBs and seven women who have broken 2:20, four of them with performances under 2:17.
As well as Munyao, Kipchoge and Kiplimo, the men&rsquo;s field features Sabastian Sawe, Tamirat Tola and Milkesa Mengesha, while Assefa, Hassan and Cheruiyot are joined in the women&rsquo;s line-up by Joyciline Jepkosgei, Megertu Alemu and Stella Chesang.
Then there is the highly anticipated marathon debut being made by world half marathon record-holder Kiplimo, who will be joined by fellow debutants Alex Yee and Eilish McColgan in the UK capital.
Kenya&rsquo;s Munyao won the men&rsquo;s race in 2:04:01 last year and has twice dipped under 2:04 &ndash; both times in Valencia &ndash; setting his PB of 2:03:11 in 2023. He placed 21st in the Olympic marathon in Paris but started the year with a 59:16 half marathon win in Marugame.
In London he faces three men with faster PBs. Top of the list is marathon great Kipchoge, the four-time London Marathon winner and two-time Olympic champion who clocked 2:01:09 in Berlin in 2022 &ndash; a former world record that now places him second on the world all-time list.
Kenya&rsquo;s Kipchoge last raced in London in 2020, when the event was held over a different course due to the pandemic. Prior to that he won in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019, and in the years since he has triumphed in Tokyo and Berlin. He returned to Tokyo last year and placed 10th before dropping out during the Olympic marathon in Paris, so the now 40-year-old will want to rebound on the streets of the city in which he has previously secured so much success.
The spotlight will also be on his compatriot Sawe to see what he can do when he contests his second marathon, following his 2:02:05 debut in Valencia in December &ndash; the second-fastest debut in history behind the 2:01:53 achieved by the late Kelvin Kiptum in Valencia in 2022. Sawe won the world half marathon title in 2023 and has a PB for that distance of 58:05, while he has also clocked 26:49 for 10km.
When it comes to the half marathon, Uganda&rsquo;s Kiplimo is the current king. Now the world waits to see what he can achieve over double the distance. The 24-year-old ran 56:42 in Barcelona in February to regain the world record and take 48 seconds off the previous global best &ndash; the greatest single improvement on the men&rsquo;s world half marathon record. He won the world half marathon title in 2020, has world and Olympic bronze medals in the 10,000m, and is a two-time world cross country champion.
He is in great company as he makes the step up to 26.2 miles. In addition to the previously mentioned contenders, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Tola is the Olympic marathon champion and has a best of 2:03:39 set in 2021, while his compatriot Mengesha ran 2:03:17 when winning last year&rsquo;s Berlin Marathon.
Kenya&rsquo;s Timothy Kiplagat ran 2:02:55 when finishing second in last year&rsquo;s Tokyo Marathon, while Ethiopia&rsquo;s Mohamed Esa was runner-up in both Boston and Chicago last year, and Dutch record-holder Abdi Nageeye won last year&rsquo;s New York City Marathon.
Like Kiplimo, Olympic triathlon champion Yee makes an anticipated marathon debut in London. The 27-year-old won the British 10,000m title back in 2018 and ran 28:07 for 10km in Valencia in January.
<h2>Rematch for Hassan and Assefa</h2>
Two of the three fastest women in history will renew their rivalry in London.
Dutch star Hassan and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Assefa secured the top two spots in the Olympic marathon last year, respectively getting gold and silver after a thrilling sprint finish that saw Hassan pip Assefa by just three seconds in Paris.
Now they return to London &ndash; Hassan for the first time since her epic marathon debut in 2023 and Assefa one year on from finishing runner-up to Peres Jepchirchir&rsquo;s women-only world record.
Assefa sits second on the world marathon all-time list with the 2:11:53 she clocked when winning in Berlin in 2023. That was a world record at the time and saw her smash the previous mark by more than two minutes as she became the first woman to run inside 2:13 and 2:12. The world record has since been taken to 2:09:56 by Ruth Chepngetich.
Assefa also ran 2:15:37 to win in Berlin in 2022 and her time in London last year was 2:16:23 as she finished just seven seconds behind Jepchirchir. She will be looking for a similar performance this time as she not only goes up against Hassan, who has a best of 2:13:44, but also Jepkosgei and Alemu who completed the top four behind Assefa in London last year &ndash; the first marathon in which four women finished inside 2:17.
That 2:13:44 by Hassan was achieved in Chicago in 2023, five and a half months on from her dramatic debut in London where she overcame a series of setbacks to win in 2:18:33. She went on to finish fourth in Tokyo and become the Olympic champion in Paris, just 37 hours after getting bronze in the 10,000m and six days after another bronze in the 5000m. The race on Sunday will be her first since the Olympics.
Kenya&rsquo;s Jepkosgei clocked 2:16:24 last year and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Alemu ran 2:16:34 and they complete the sub-2:17 quartet contesting this year&rsquo;s race. In addition to her third-place finish from last year, Jepkosgei won the 2021 London Marathon and finished runner-up in 2022, while Alemu won the Valencia Marathon in December and finished second to Hassan in London in 2023 and third in 2022.
Uganda&rsquo;s Chesang was runner-up to Alemu that day in Valencia where she ran a national record of 2:18:26, and before that she finished eighth in the Olympic marathon.
They will be joined on the start line by Kenya&rsquo;s 2018 London Marathon champion Cheruiyot who returns to the race for the first time in five years.&nbsp;More recently the 41-year-old multiple Olympic and world track medallist finished third at last year&rsquo;s New York City Marathon.&nbsp;
Great Britain&rsquo;s McColgan, the Commonwealth 10,000m champion, will make her marathon debut.

Olympic medallists Kenny Bednarek and Twanisha Terry are among the 29 athletes selected to represent the United States at the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 on 10-11 May.
Two-time Olympic 200m silver medallist Bednarek, Courtney Lindsey and Kyree King all formed part of the victorious US men&rsquo;s 4x100m quartet at the last edition of the World Athletics Relays in The Bahamas. They will reunite in Guangzhou, where they will be joined by world 200m silver medallist Erriyon Knighton, Brandon Hicklin, Lance Lang and Kendal&nbsp;Williams.
Olympic 100m finalist Terry ran the second leg as part of USA&rsquo;s gold medal-winning 4x100m quartet at the Games in Paris and she heads to Guangzhou as part of a squad also featuring 2022 world indoor 60m silver medallist Mikiah Brisco and Cambrea Sturgis.
Tokyo Olympic mixed 4x400m bronze medallist&nbsp;Kendall Ellis&nbsp;and Lynna Irby-Jackson, who won gold in the 4x400m and bronze in the mixed 4x400m in Japan, are joined by Bailey Lear on the women&rsquo;s squad. The men&rsquo;s 4x400m squad features Tokyo Olympic mixed 4x400m bronze medallist Elija Godwin.
USA claimed four victories at the 2024 World Relays, winning the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s 4x100m, and the women&rsquo;s and mixed 4x400m.

Global medallists on US team for World Relays in Guangzhou

Ten world record-holders and 23 reigning global individual champions lead the star-studded fields for the first Wanda Diamond League meeting of the year in Xiamen on Saturday (26).
Mondo Duplantis, Grant Holloway, Faith Kipyegon, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Gudaf Tsegay are among the athletes who will be looking to kick off their campaigns in style when they head to the Egret Stadium in the Chinese city.
Duplantis returns to the scene of the eighth of his now 11 world pole vault records. The Swedish 25-year-old, who <a href="https://worldathletics.org/news/news/duplantis-wins-laureus-world-sportsman-year-award" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on Monday was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year</a>, cleared 6.24m in Xiamen last year and went on to set another world record of 6.25m in Paris, where he retained his Olympic title.&nbsp;
He has achieved another two world records since &ndash; 6.26m in Silesia later in August and 6.27m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. The meeting in Xiamen will be his outdoor season opener as Duplantis competes for the first time since winning his third consecutive world indoor title in Nanjing last month. Emmanouil Karalis of Greece improved his national record to 6.05m to secure silver and is also in action this weekend, along with world silver medallist Ernest John Obiena and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks.
Competition is set to be fierce in the women&rsquo;s high jump. Ukraine&rsquo;s Mahuchikh improved the world record to 2.10m in Paris last year and went on to claim Olympic gold, but she was third behind Australia&rsquo;s Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson at last month&rsquo;s World Indoor Championships. Those three athletes clash again in Xiamen, with the field also featuring Mahuchikh&rsquo;s compatriot Yuliya Levchenko.
Five women who have surpassed 70 metres will renew their rivalry in the women&rsquo;s discus. Leading the field is USA&rsquo;s Olympic champion Valarie Allman, who improved the North American record to 73.52m in Ramona earlier this month. She faces world champion Laulauga Tausaga, multiple global gold medallist Sandra Elkasevic, Yaime Perez and Jorinde van Klinken, as well as Olympic silver medallist Feng Bin, competing on home soil.
The women&rsquo;s shot put also offers a top-class battle, as USA&rsquo;s two-time world champion Chase Jackson faces Canada&rsquo;s two-time world indoor champion Sarah Mitton, Olympic silver medallist Maddi Wesche, two-time world medallist Jessica Schilder and home favourites Gong Lijiao and Song Jiayuan.
<h2>Season debuts for Kipyegon and Warholm</h2>
Kenya&rsquo;s Kipyegon claimed her third Olympic 1500m title in Paris last year and in Xiamen she will make her 2025 debut by dropping down to the 1000m. The 31-year-old holds world records in the 1500m and the mile, and she sits second on the world all-time list for the 1000m following her 2:29.15 run in Monaco in 2020 &ndash; that performance just 0.17 shy of Svetlana Masterkova's world record set in 1996.
The Xiamen 1000m will be Kipyegon&rsquo;s first race since the Athlos meeting in September last year. Earlier that month she won her fifth Diamond League title at the final in Brussels.
She will be joined in Xiamen by athletes including Ethiopia&rsquo;s world U20 champion Saron Berhe and Olympic 800m silver medallist Tsige Duguma, plus Australia&rsquo;s Abbey Caldwell, Uganda&rsquo;s Halimah Nakaayi and Benin&rsquo;s Noelie Yarigo.
The women&rsquo;s 5000m will feature a clash of global champions &ndash; both of them world record-holders. Kenya&rsquo;s Beatrice Chebet achieved an Olympic 5000m and 10,000m title double in Paris and is the world record-holder in the longer distance as well as for 5km on the roads, while Ethiopia&rsquo;s Tsegay is the world 5000m record-holder who more recently won the world indoor 1500m title in a championship record in Nanjing.
Their head-to-head record in 5000m track finals stands at 3-2 in Tsegay&rsquo;s favour and in Xiamen they will clash for the first time since last year&rsquo;s Olympic Games. Among those joining them on the start line are Ethiopia&rsquo;s two-time world indoor champion Freweyni Hailu, Birke Haylom and world U20 steeplechase champion Sembo Almayew, making her 5000m debut.
Following its introduction as an official event, the meeting will feature the 300m hurdles with world 400m hurdles record-holder Karsten Warholm using the race to open his season. The Norwegian three-time world champion has held the world 300m hurdles best of 33.26 since 2021 and the race will close the competition in Xiamen, where he will go up against Kyron McMaster and CJ Allen.
The women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles pits world indoor 60m hurdles champion and world record-holder Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas against world 100m hurdles record-holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, Jamaica&rsquo;s two-time world champion Danielle Williams, USA&rsquo;s early world leader Grace Stark and home star Wu Yanni.
In the men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles, USA&rsquo;s Olympic and three-time world champion Holloway will want to return to winning ways after finishing second in Gainesville last weekend following his third world indoor 60m hurdles title triumph in Nanjing. His competition includes his compatriots Cordell Tinch, Freddie Crittenden and Olympic silver medallist Daniel Roberts.
Jamaica&rsquo;s Shericka Jackson continues her comeback in the 200m. The two-time world champion last raced the distance in Szekesfehervar in July but pulled up injured and did not run at the Olympic Games. She clocked 36.13 for 300m earlier this month after opening her year with two 60m races and in Xiamen she will face world indoor 60m champion Mujinga Kambundji, Jenna Prandini and Tamara Clark.
The entry list for the men&rsquo;s 100m stars Botswana&rsquo;s Olympic 200m gold and 100m silver medallist Letsile Tebogo as well as all three world indoor 60m medallists &ndash; champion Jeremiah Azu, Lachlan Kennedy and Akani Simbine &ndash; plus Christian Coleman and Ferdinand Omanyala.
The men&rsquo;s 400m features USA&rsquo;s world indoor champion Christopher Bailey, Olympic and world gold medallist Kirani James and Bayapo Ndori, while Morocco&rsquo;s multiple Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali goes in the 3000m steeplechase &ndash; his first race since last year&rsquo;s Diamond League final.
World indoor medallists Wayne Pinnock and Liam Adcock are in long jump action, while the non-Diamond League triple jump includes Hugues Fabrice Zango and the javelin features Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane van Dyk.

All-star cast to light up Diamond League season opener in Xiamen

The World Athletics scoring tables have been updated for 2025 and are available to download from the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/about-iaaf/documents/technical-information" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Athletics website</a>.
These tables are separate from the combined events scoring system, which remains unchanged.
Statistical data has been analysed since the last edition of the scoring tables &ndash; including performances from 2022, 2023 and 2024 &ndash; and has been used to produce this latest version. Updated on 23 April, the document now also includes scoring tables for the 300m hurdles, and the half marathon and marathon race walk events.
Created in 1982 by the late Bojidar Spiriev, the scoring tables have in recent years been maintained by his son Attila.

Jamaica dominated the Carifta Games, which concluded on Monday (21) after three days of action in Port of Spain, Trinidad &amp; Tobago.
The Caribbean powerhouse earned 78 medals, 30 of them gold, giving them their 47th win since the games began in 1972. The Bahamas finished second with 16 gold medals ahead of the host nation, Trinidad and Tobago (9 gold).
In his introductory speech, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe stated that the event is usually his first appearance in the athletics calendar each year. Stuart Young, the recently appointed Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, and NACAC President and World Athletics Council Member Mike Sands were also in attendance.
Jamaica&rsquo;s Kamari Kennedy was deservingly voted the most outstanding athlete. Kennedy collected the Austin Sealy Award after breaking two U17 championship records. He first won the shot put with 18.90m, adding 10cm to the previous mark, then returned the following day to win the discus with 60.87m, surpassing the previous record by more than seven metres.
Jamaican U20 record-holder Marla-Kay Lampart broke the Games record in an enthralling girls&rsquo; shot put final with a massive heave of 17.44m in the fourth round. Lampart, who got injured while completing the effort, watched anxiously as Bahamian rival Annae Mackey also breached the 17-metre mark with a lifetime best effort of 17.14m in the final round. Both went beyond the previous Games&rsquo; record of 15.75m.
&ldquo;My expectations coming here was to beat my personal best of 15.98m,&rdquo; said Lampart. &ldquo;I started tentatively because I was nervous, but I stayed calm and gradually got my groove back and trusted my capabilities.&rdquo;
There was a dramatic conclusion to the U20 girls&rsquo; long jump contest when Trinidadian Gianna Paul sailed out to 6.48m in the final round to leapfrog teammate and defending champion Janae De Gannes for gold. Gianna&rsquo;s effort was two centimetres shy of equalling the Games record set last year by De Gannes.
In the girls&rsquo; U20 100m final, defending champion Sabrina Dockery and world U20 200m bronze medallist Shanoya Douglas were expected to finish 1-2 for Jamaica. But after Dockery suffered another false start &ndash; as had been the case at the 2023 Carifta Games &ndash; Douglas went on to win comfortably in a PB of 11.26 (0.3m/s).
&ldquo;The crowd was noisy, and I just kept my composure and focused on blocking out the noise and executing the perfect race,&rdquo; said Douglas, who went on to complete the sprint double by taking the 200m in 23.02.
In the boys&rsquo; equivalent, Jamal Stephenson &ndash; a late addition to the Jamaican team after Gary Card had to pull out with an injury &ndash; took the title in a PB of 10.24 (-1.4m/s).
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m very grateful for this opportunity and I&rsquo;m happy to make my country proud,&rdquo; said Stephenson, who suffered two disqualifications at the Jamaican High School Championships in March.
Stephenson&rsquo;s compatriot Michael Graham won the U17 boys&rsquo; final in 10.53, while St Lucia&rsquo;s Jady Emmanuel ran a lifetime best of 11.50 to win the girls&rsquo; U17 100m final. Emmanuel, who takes inspiration from her compatriot Julien Alfred, completed the sprint double in 23.47.
The 400m finals produced their fair share of surprises. After defending champion Tianna Springer of Guyana romped to victory in the U20 girls&rsquo; final in 53.07, teammate Malachi Austin, the defending champion in the boys&rsquo; equivalent, lost a thriller to Bahamian Zion Miller 46.51 to 46.54.
A few minutes earlier, the highly touted Bahamian Eagan Neely won the boys&rsquo; U17 final in 47.80. Tyra Fenton of Antigua and Barbuda ran a 53.93 lifetime best in the girls&rsquo; U17 final to stun pre-race favourite Keyezra Thomas (54.34) of The Bahamas.
Defending champion Michelle Smith of the US Virgin Islands continued her chokehold on both the 400m hurdles and 800m. Smith, who has not lost either event since 2022, romped to victory in 56.60 in the 400m hurdles before returning to wrap up proceedings in the 800m in 2:07.23.
Robert Miller won the U20 boys&rsquo; 400m hurdles in 50.42 while Bahamian Jahcario Wilson produced a storming homestretch run to win the U17 boys&rsquo; title in 52.44. He then added 110m hurdles title (13.70) the next day.
Defending champion Shaquane Gordon of Jamaica was pushed to a Games record (13.19) by compatriot Daniel Clarke (13.21) in an exciting U20 boys&rsquo; 110m hurdles final.
Christopher Sammy and Oshea Cummings raised the decibel levels of the home crowd several notches on Saturday when they won the U17 boys&rsquo; and girls&rsquo; 1500m titles respectively, a few minutes apart. Sammy, who was competing at his first Carifta Games, returned the next day to land the 3000m title in 9:11.51
Trinidad and Tobago&rsquo;s Tyrique Vincent was impressive in winning the first-ever decathlon competition at the games, amassing 6522 points.
Jamaica&rsquo;s U17 girls&rsquo; 4x100m team set a Games record of 44.86. The Bahamas, anchored by Eagan Neely, scored an impressive win in the U17 boys&rsquo; 4x100m in 41.11.
Jamaica, stung by a defeat in the U17 boys final, came roaring back in the U20 category. The girls ran 43.65, then the boys clocked 39.56, both teams registering world-U20-leading times.
The Bahamas outclassed defending champions Jamaica in the U20 boys&rsquo; 4x400m, clocking 3:06.18 to Jamaica&rsquo;s 3:07.44.

Women&rsquo;s World Athlete of the Year Sifan Hassan, who next Sunday (27) returns to London where she won her career marathon debut in 2023, has generously donated her victorious Paris 2024 Olympic Games marathon singlet and name bib to <a href="https://www.tinyurl.com/visitMOWA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA)</a>.
On Sunday 11 August, Hassan claimed the final athletics gold medal of the Paris 2024 Games, winning the women&rsquo;s marathon in an Olympic record of 2:22:55 to complete an impressive medal treble.
The Dutchwoman, who had already bagged 5000m and 10,000m bronze medals in Paris, held off Ethiopia&rsquo;s Tigist Assefa in a frantic sprint finish to win by three seconds, the closest ever winning margin in a women&rsquo;s Olympic marathon.

<h2>Comparisons with legends</h2>
&ldquo;During the World Athletics Awards weekend in Monaco, I had the chance to visit the World Athletics offices and see the amazing memories from the 1948 Olympics that belonged to Fanny Blankers-Koen,&rdquo; said Hassan. &ldquo;It was so inspiring to see her history up close in the Museum of World Athletics.
&ldquo;I am so happy that my Paris 2024 marathon-winning singlet will now be part of the museum, and I feel honoured that it will be included alongside the Netherlands items Fanny wore at the London Games.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m excited to know that my singlet will be on display in Tokyo later this year during the World Athletics Championships. I hope it will inspire young girls everywhere to believe in themselves, start playing sports, and chase their dreams &ndash; even if they seem impossible."
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe commented: &ldquo;With an extraordinary range which has seen Hassan win global golds from 1500m to the marathon, she is unquestionably already one of the sports greats.

<h2>Running into the sunlight</h2>
Hassan has become accustomed to overcoming challenges, so it was perhaps no great surprise that she found the strength to conquer the mighty one that presented itself on the streets of Paris on the final day of the 2024 Olympic Games.
The challenge of tackling the most difficult Olympic women&rsquo;s marathon course &ndash; with its prolonged rise of 428m at 15km and its 13.5% gradient at 29km &ndash; was not an insurmountable one for a woman of Hassan&rsquo;s considerable mettle, even if she was tackling it with legs that were far from as fresh as those of her rivals.

Just 37 hours earlier, she had finished third in the 10,000m final in the Stade de France. Six days previously, she had also earned the bronze medal in the 5000m final.
With 20km of racing already in her legs, could a runner of even Hassan&rsquo;s formidable calibre possibly become the first woman to emulate Emil Zatopek by winning an Olympic medal at the same Games in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon?
She had, of course, completed a historic hat-trick of her own at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, adding 1500m bronze to golds from the 5000m and 10,000m. This time, however, after accomplishing another medal double at 5000m and 10,000m, had to contend with the gruelling 26.2-mile course from Hotel de Ville to Les Invalides and the challenge of Tigist Assefa, the fastest female marathon runner in history at the time.
<h2>&lsquo;Why did I do that? What is wrong with me?&rsquo;</h2>
Throughout the race, Hassan was rueing her decision to contest the track races, rather than save herself for the marathon, at which her 2:13:44 European record in Chicago the previous October put her second on the world all-time list, behind Assefa&rsquo;s 2:11:53 in Berlin in the same year.
&ldquo;I was regretting that I had run the 5000m and the 10,000m,&rdquo; she later confided. &ldquo;I was telling myself, &lsquo;If I hadn&rsquo;t done that, I would feel great today&rsquo;.
&ldquo;It was so hard. Every step of the way I was thinking, &lsquo;Why did I do that? What is wrong with me?&rsquo;&rdquo;
Hassan had been wracked by similar self-doubt on her marathon debut in London in April 2023, twice stopping to stretch her injured hip, and looking set for a DNF, before making up a 28-second deficit and securing a sensational sprint finish victory.
In Paris she was dropped by the lead pack on the huge incline at 29km but fought her way back into contention. With 250m to go, the marathon came down to a sprint battle between the big two.
In a snapshot brilliantly captured by Michael Steele in the World Athletics Photograph of the Year, at the final bend leading to the finishing straight at Les Invalides, the two women clashed shoulder-to-shoulder, elbow-to-elbow, as they fought for the inside line.

It was a fittingly dramatic denouement to the Paris 2024 athletics programme. Both women were blessed with the speed of sub-two-minute 800m performers &ndash; the distance at which they made their Olympic bows in Rio in 2016.
But it was Hassan who not just held her ground in the physical clash of the titans but who proceeded to surge clear, drawing upon the basic speed that took her to the world indoor 1500m title in Portland in 2016 and to the world outdoor crown at the same distance in Doha in 2019. The flying Dutchwoman surged clear to win by three seconds.
Her time, 2:22:55, an Olympic record, had a neat historical echo. Zatopek&rsquo;s winning time in Helsinki in 1952, also an Olympic record, was 2:23:03.
<h2>A female breakthrough</h2>
And so, at the end of a route inspired by la marche de femmes, the mass march on Versailles by the women of Paris in the French Revolution, Hassan had a place in athletics posterity alongside the Czech legend with the French first name.
&ldquo;I was scared of this race,&rdquo; Hassan reflected in the aftermath, struggling to come to terms with her achievement. &ldquo;I thought they would break me. When I finished, I was thinking, &lsquo;I am the Olympic champion. How is this possible?&rsquo;&rdquo;
At the age of 31, Hassan had won a third Olympic gold medal, one shy of Fanny Blankers Koen&rsquo;s ground-breaking tally from the London Games of 1948. Track and field&rsquo;s original Flying Dutchwoman was honoured as the Female Athlete of the 20th Century by the IAAF. Hassan was named the Women&rsquo;s World Athlete of the Year by World Athletics.

<h3>Five highlights from the ABW Standard year 1 review</h3>

When the Wanda Diamond League kicks off its 16th season in Xiamen this weekend as the world&rsquo;s premiere one-day meeting athletics circuit, it will also embark on its first as the sport&rsquo;s pioneering competition group on the sustainability front.
Each of the 15 Wanda Diamond League meetings held in 2024 reported their sustainability progress against the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/athletics-better-world/sustainability/athletics-for-a-better-world-standard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Athletics for a Better World (ABW) Standard</a>, the tiered evaluation system implemented by World Athletics last year that measures an event&rsquo;s achievements in sustainable delivery. Underscoring the league&rsquo;s commitment to sustainability principles, 10 of the meetings reached a certificate recognition.
The Oslo Bislett Games achieved platinum level, the first one-day meeting to reach the ABW Standard&rsquo;s highest tier.
The Welklasse Zurich, like Oslo an athletics pioneer in sustainable delivery, achieved gold. Monaco&rsquo;s Herculis meeting achieved silver, while the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, Stockholm&rsquo;s Bauhaus Galan and the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia all reached bronze.
The Wanda Diamond League Xiamen, Athletissima Lausanne, the Meeting de Paris, and the London Athletics Meet all reached the recognised event level, the tier that all events were encouraged to target during the standard&rsquo;s first year.
<h3>Focus on fan mobility</h3>
The ABW Standard consists of 55 action areas that address efforts to minimise an event&rsquo;s environmental impact and maximise its social and local economic benefits.
Organisers of more than 100 events that took place last year reported their sustainability achievements against the ABW Standard. An extensive review and analysis of its first year will be released in June; below are some of the highlights seen across the Diamond League last year beginning with efforts around fan mobility.
More than 400,000 spectators attended Diamond League meetings in 2024. Reducing the environmental impact of getting fans to an event is a key focus of the ABW Standard, with promising figures reported during the standard&rsquo;s inaugural year.
More than three-quarters of the spectators in Oslo (80%), Zurich (75%) and London (75%) used public transit or active travel to reach the event. About two-thirds of attendees in Stockholm (68%), Xiamen (65%) and Monaco (62%) took a tram, metro, bus or bike and more than half did in Lausanne (52%). In Doha, 40% used public transportation, double the figure from 2023.
To encourage the use of public transit options, Zurich, Oslo, Lausanne, Monaco and Silesia offered ticketed spectators free transport to the event through partnerships with municipal and regional public transport service providers &ndash; a long-standing practice for some &ndash; while Brussels offered a discount fare for the first time.
To further reduce their CO2 emissions and to improve local air quality near event venues, events are increasingly including more fully electric vehicles in their fleets. In 2024 this was supported by Diamond League sponsor Zeekr.
One of the most noteworthy initiatives was a zero-emission transfer of 120 athletes, personnel and media from Oslo to Stockholm for the Bauhaus-Galan meeting in the Swedish capital. Electric buses transported everyone from the meeting hotel to Oslo&rsquo;s central station, where specially booked trains awaited. The five-hour train journey ended at the central station in Stockholm, just a two-minute walk from the meeting&rsquo;s main hotel. That one-way train journey released 247.46kg of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere, 12 times less than the CO2e that would have been emitted if those 120 people flew, contributing to a substantial reduction in the event&rsquo;s carbon footprint.
<h3>Impacts of food</h3>
An area where organisers can immediately reduce their environmental impact is through the food provided. The ABW Standard sets seven criteria to define a robust food management plan; three meetings &ndash; Oslo, Zurich and London &ndash; put six of those in action, providing a menu that was locally sourced, well balanced, offered vegetarian and vegan options, carefully managed food waste, and provided a donation scheme for any unused food.
Stockholm and Xiamen hit five criteria, and Silesia, Monaco, Paris and Brussels successfully delivered on four.
<h3>Powered by renewables</h3>
The ABW Standard looks at the type of power that is used by venues. Some Diamond League events are scoring exceptionally well, using every tool available to them.
Through power provided by solar panels on their roofs, strong renewable grid infrastructures in their cities and renewable energy tariff schemes, the Zurich and Oslo events receive more than 90 percent of their power from renewable energy sources. Renewable energy tariffs, certificate systems that ensure energy has been generated from renewable sources, also power stadiums in Stockholm (100%), Lausanne (90%) and Monaco (75%).
<h3>Commitment to local economic impact</h3>
The ABW Standard also examines where events are purchasing or renting their goods and services. Here too, meetings are also showing a strong commitment to working with local businesses and suppliers to maximise local economic benefits. One hundred percent of the Zurich&rsquo;s suppliers are located within 100 kilometres of the venue. For Oslo that figure is nearly 93%, for Lausanne 84% and Monaco 73%. Xiamen and London report 63% and 61% respectively.
<h3>Athlete engagement</h3>
Involving the stars of the day, the meeting&rsquo;s athletes, around sustainability initiatives is also an important piece of the ABW Standard pie.
Karsten Warholm, Jemma Reekie and Molly Caudery led fellow athletes at tree-planting events, the former in Oslo an the latter two in Doha. Wu Yanni and Zhu Yaming served as the sustainability ambassadors in Xiamen, sharing initiatives on social media platforms while Amandine Brossier and Melina Robert-Michon spearheaded athlete initiatives in Paris. And a video created by Zurich&rsquo;s sustainability ambassador Ajla Del Ponte, who is also part of the World Athletics Champions for a Better World programme, received more than 1200 likes on Instagram.
<h3>About the ABW Standard</h3>
In January 2024, sustainability reporting through the Athletics for a Better World Standard became a requirement for most global elite competitions managed or awarded by World Athletics. When fully adopted, the ABW standard will be the largest sustainability evaluation system in the sport industry.

 World Athletics has released further detail about its three-year gender leadership strategy as a clear roadmap to reinforce its commitment to empower women, promote sustainable change, and position athletics as a global model for equity and inclusion.
The World Athletics Gender Leadership Strategy 2025-2027 outlines key objectives focused on promoting awareness, initiating policy change, and implementing education to support progression and growth of the pool and pipeline of female leaders aligned to defined targets.
Those targets include:

<li>Sustain and grow the pipeline of female leaders for decision-making positions throughout athletics Administrators: Achieve minimum of 40% female representation on member federation executive boards by 2029 (phased approach with current mandatory minimum of 20%) Referees: - Achieve minimum of 40% female representation across all World Athletics Referee Education and Certification System exams (Bronze, Silver, Gold) by 2027 Coaches: - Achieve minimum of 40% female representation for CECS Level 1 coaches by 2029 (phased approach with interim goal of 35% by 2027) &amp; 30% female representation for CECS Level 2 coaches by 2029 (phased approach with interim goal of 25% by 2027) </li>

 The Gender Leadership Strategy 2025-2027 builds on the previous strategy and work done since the establishment of the Gender Leadership Taskforce in 2017. In 2023, the World Athletics Council achieved gender equality, becoming the first Olympic sport to do so.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: &ldquo;I am incredibly proud of the progress we&rsquo;ve made to date to increase female representation in athletics &ndash; highlighted by our 50/50 gender balanced Council. This strategy reflects our continued commitment toward ensuring women are not only present but prominent in leadership and decision-making roles across our sport.
&ldquo;We know challenges remain in getting more female coaches, referees and administrators into athletics but we are committed to equality and opportunity to drive lasting change across the athletics community worldwide.&rdquo;
World Athletics Gender Leadership Taskforce Chair Stephanie Hightower said: &ldquo;This strategy is not just a roadmap - it&rsquo;s a commitment to building a culture where women are equally represented, empowered, and equipped to lead at every level of athletics.

World Athletics sets ambitious targets with three-year gender leadership strategy

World and Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis claimed one of the biggest prizes in sport on Monday (21) by being named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award.
The Swedish superstar was presented with the accolade at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid in a ceremony that brought together the greatest athletes not only of the past 12 months, but of the 21st Century.
It was fourth time lucky for Duplantis, who had been nominated for this award for the past three years. He is just the second track-and-field athlete to win this award, after four-time winner Usain Bolt.
Still just 25 years old, the Swede shows no signs of loosening his grip over the competition following a historic 2024 season. After winning his second world indoor title in Glasgow last year, Duplantis went on to win Olympic gold in Paris with a world record clearance, before breaking it again at the Silesia Diamond League meeting the following month.
&ldquo;I am incredibly honoured to have won my first Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in the sporting capital of Madrid and to have the great Usain Bolt pay tribute to me, who I follow as the second track and field athlete to win this award,&rdquo; said Duplantis, who received his award from last year&rsquo;s winner, Novak Djokovic.
