Thirsty footie fans are angry with one of Britain's biggest pub chains - because they are forced to pay an extra pound or more for a pint on match days.

Wetherspoons , which runs more than 900 pubs nationwide, admits that it imposes a surcharge in some pubs near football grounds - which can push up prices by as much as 60% according to disgruntled supporters

At the Bishop Blaize near Manchester United 's Old Trafford ground a pint of Carling reportedly goes up from £2. 25p to £3.60p and a gin or whisky from £2.65p to £3.20p.

Even soft drinks are increased - the price of a Pepsi rises by 50p

Apart from Manchester two Wetherspoon pubs near Chelsea FC 's Stamford Bridge ground and Crystal Palace 's Selhurst Park also charge drinkers a hefty premium on match days.

And soccer is not the only booze price-hike sport - Wetherspoons Trent Bridge Inn next to cricket ground has, as part of its legal agreement, has to charge the same price as bars inside the ground on international days - but not regular county games.

One fan said: "They know they have a captive audience on match days - it seems like they are cashing in at the expense of the supporters who want to get into the spirit of the game and have a pint or two before the kick-off."

Wetherspoons defended its pricing policy which it describes as "event pricing".

Spokesman Eddie Gershon said:"We have never hidden the fact that prices on some drinks are increased on match days.

"This is for a number of reasons - a pub could have to employ six or more security staff for the only time that it ever needs door staff.

"And due to the volume of customers on match days the pub employs more staff than is usual and we are unable to serve food which has a knock-on effect for the pub.

"All of these things increase the cost of running a pub on match days."
