Exhibition Devoted to Daghestan
The Central House of Artists, Permanent Representation of Daghestan Republic
with the President of Russian Federation and International Confederation of
Artists' Unions invite you to visit the exhibition of painting of Karakhan
Seferbekhov (Moscow). One of the brightest representatives of modern
expressionism, member of International Artists' Federation of UNESCO,
Karakhan Seferbekhov was born in Daghestan, at the shore of the Caspian sea.
He got his education in Moscow. His amazing efficiency has given the artist
the possibility to take part in many national and foreign exhibitions,
beginning from 1988. The artist's first personal exhibition was held in 1996
and the present exposition is his seventh one. The series of sea and
mountain landscapes presented here glorifying the beauty of that wonderful
land, the land with its own ancient culture, ethnology and historical
traditions and customs, is a kind of nostalgia and sign of the artist's love
for his Motherland. Karakhan Seferbekhov has been living and working in
Moscow for a long time, but he never forgets the warmth, the sunshine, the
grandeur of mountains and the brightness of colors of his native Daghestan
land. He transfers all these feelings to his canvases tenderly and
carefully, but at the same time with his "southern" temper. The exhibition
will be open until November, 4, 2001, in Hall 17.

An exhibition of N. Faustova and A. Makovnev in the "Photo Center"
Advertising Center "Ad Libitum" is presenting photo collections of Natalia
Faustova and Afanasy Makovnev. Natalia Faustova's photo works are a new way
of viewing habitual things, just a hint of sympathies and feelings,
unexpressed words and new stories, sometimes without an end, with a kind of
marks of omission which let the audience to find their own upshot. Seeing
her works without knowing the author's name one can unmistakably say that
they are purely woman's photos containing a refined philosophy and
laconicism adjoining symbolism. Afanasy Makovnev was born in Moscow where he
got technical and potogpraphy education. After his work in several cinema
expeditions of "Central Scientific Film" at Chukotka he stayed to live there
in a village of Syreniki, at the Pacific coast where hunting walruses and
whales is considered the most adequate occupation for a man. The main themes
of A. Makovnev's works are the nature and animals of Chukotka and Alaska.
The exhibition will work until October, 28.

An Image of the Earth from another point of view
"Izvestia" Newspaper and "Russian Photo" Company within the boundaries of
the "Extreme-Photo" Project are presenting an exhibition of Dmitry Volgin
and his friends "View from the Skies. Day-dream Flights with Photos and
Comments". It is a unique chance to see in one and the same hall Florida and
the Gulf of Mexico, the Seven Miracles of the Moscow Region, family castles
of "new" and "old" Russians, the colony of people of Earth on an asteroid
from a fantastic film, ostriches walking along the snow path and wintering
steamers. An amazing world is the one we can see from the height. There are
people for whom such day-dream flights become an important part of their
lives, but even they do not always take notice of hidden signs of the world.
Rare individuals manage to see wonderful things which can be viewed only
from the skies, take photos and record them. Dmitry Volgin and his friends
are among such individuals. We shall see such an earth along which we are
walking for the first time. The exhibition is functioning in thee Oval Hall
of Media-center of "Izvestia", Tverskaya street, 18.

Unfamiliar Kanova
On September, 17, 2001, an exhibition was opened in the State Hermitage
which presents engravings and paintings by the great Italian master, the
most outstanding sculptor of neoclassicism Antonio Kanova (1757 - 1822). The
exposition has been arranged by the State Hermitage in cooperation with the
City Museum Bassano del Grappa and Foundation of Kanova in Possanio (Italy).
The exhibition is unique, because the Hermitage which owns the largest
collection of Antonio Kanova's marble statues in the world has got none of
his engravings or paintings. 102 exhibits are being demonstrated at the
exhibition, they come from the City Museum Bassano del Grappa (Bassano,
Italy) and Plaster Collection of the city of Possanio (the sculptor's
Motherland). They are drawings and paintings on canvas made by oil and
tempera. The importance of this graphic heritage nothing like which has been
left by any sculptor in the world was realized only recently. The artist
himself had attached the greatest significance to his drawings establishing
an equality between the pencil and the chisel calling both "instruments
leading to immortality". The exhibition will last until January, 7, 2002.

Exhibition of Mikhail Shvarzman "Retrospective"
From October, 11, up to November, 5, 2001, the Exhibition of Mikhail
Shvarzman "Retrospective" is open in the Marble Palace. Mikhail Matveevich
Shvarzman (1926 - 1997) was born in Moscow, in a family op a "nepman". The
epoch of NEP (New Economic Policy) had a tragic end and M. Shvarzman's
family had to hide themselves constantly from the persecution of the
authorities. Pictures by M. Shvarzman are just like a prayer embodied in
color and form, a "mute psalm" never needing any verbal accompaniment. M.
Shvarzman had exposed his works very seldom. The present exhibition for the
first time in St-Petersburg is giving one a chance to see the artist's
creative work. 60 paintings, 30 engravings and documental photos are
presented at the exhibition.
