I. as a Relat., sts. c. gen. loci, “τ ῆς πόλεως ὅπ ο υ κάλλιστον στρατοπεδεύσασθαι” Pl.R.415d, cf. Hdt.2.172 ; “ὅπ ο υ βούλοιτο τ ο ῦ δρόμου” X.HG2.4.27 ; “ἔσ θ ᾽ ὅπ ο υ ” in some places, A.Eu.517 (lyr.), Fr.302 : standing for the Relat. Adj., μέλη, ὅπ ο υ (i. e. ἐν ο ἷς) “χελιδὼν ἦν τις ἐμπεποιημένη” Ar.Av.1301 : with other Particles, “ὅκ ο υ δή” somewhere or other, Hdt.3.129 ; ὅπ ο υ ἄν wherever, with subj., IG 12.76.11, etc.; in Trag. the ἄν may be omitted, as ὅπ ο υ δ ᾽ Ἀπόλλων σ κ α ι ὸς ᾖ, τίνες σοφοί; E.El.972, etc. (never in Att. 2. in indirect questions, “ὄφ ρ α πύθηαι πατρός, ὅπ ο υ κύθε γ α ῖα ” Od.3.16, cf. 16.306, S.OT924, etc.: with Verbs of motion in pregnant sense, “ὅκ ο υ ἐτράπετο, ο ὐκέτι ε ἶχ ο ν ε ἰπ ε ῖν ” Hdt.2.119 ; “κ ε ῖνος δ ᾽ ὅπ ο υ βέβηκεν, ο ὐδ ε ὶς ο ἶδ ε ” S.Tr.40, v.l. in X.Cyr.3.1.37, etc.: in many passages editors have in this sense restd. ὅπ ο ι , mostly from codd. ; in repeating a question, ἡ Λακεδαίμων π ο ῦ 'σ τ ι ν ; Answ. ὅπ ο υ 'στίν; (do you ask) where it is? Ar.Nu.214 : c. gen., “ε ἰδότες ὅκ ο υ γ ῆς ε ἴη ” Hdt.4.150, cf. Pl.R.403e.
II. the strict local sense occasionally passes into,
1. a sense involving Time or Occasion, “ὅ. τ ι ν ᾽ ἴδ ῃ” Thgn.922, cf. 999, X.HG3.3.6 ; “σ ι γ ᾶν θ ᾽ ὅ. δ ε ῖ κ α ὶ λέγειν τ ὰ καίρια” A.Ch.582, cf. Eu.277 ; ο ὐκ ἔσ θ ᾽ ὅ. there is no case in which, i.e. in no case. S.OT448, Aj.1069, E.HF186, D.3.35 ; so ἔσ τ ι ν ὅ.; as a question, Id.18.22.
