Worth the time
Fantasy, mining, crafting, and building you're very own fortress on a world crafted to you're liking, with no load times. Customize your character and level up with materials similar to Minecraft. Each layer in these computer generated worlds have multiple levels/layers, much like the earth's crust. The further you dive, the more life springs to your world. Monsters, events, gear, caverns, and even more! (I don't want to ruin the surprises.) Soon, you'll learn that digging straight down can be exhausting, and you'll need to make trips to the top of your castle. Unless ... you feel like making a crafting station in a recently discovered cavern, beneath your very own town.i've spent a healthy amount of time playing this game, and regret not a minute. This isn't an expensive game vs your blockbuster titles new releases, including no DLC. Once you've bought the game, you own everything the developers intended for you; no excessive additional prices. You'll spend more time learning how to expand your domain/town/castle/tunnel systems, and discover something new all along the way in the process.A popular indie game such as this is overlooked in the market of video games all the time. Not without saying, this title has withstood the test of time of a decade. You can visit you're world you've spent countless hours in at any time, once again, with little to one load time, and kick some goblin or Big Eye ass.Disclaimer: The controls for this game is tricky and hard to get used to at first. If you're looking for the full experience, try this title on PC or Console.I give this a 4/5 because the mechanics are much easier on PC or perhaps console. Otherwise, this is an amazing game.

Imagine what Minecraft might be like if it had been made with pixel art sprites and released in the SNES era. That sums up the overall vibe of Terraria pretty well. It also explains why I just can't seem to tear myself away from the darned thing. This devious little indie sandbox title borrows so many ideas from Notch's game that it essentially is Minecraft in 2D, but it also beefs up the familiar gameplay in exciting ways. There's a lot more creepy crawly stuff to kill, and the staggering number of doodads you can MacGyver together into deadly weapons to slay them with is mouth-watering. Say what you will; there's some gnarly fun to be had in these uncharted depths.

After you're done customizing your sprite character, Terraria dumps you on the colorful surface of a randomly generated pixel world with nothing more than a handful of tools and the vague sense that you're meant to build stuff, explore the terrain, and battle monsters. Figuring out exactly how that's done is a little puzzling at first. There's a lone guide wandering around the surface, though his advice is random. The lack of a tutorial meant I had to consult the game's Wiki page to get a better sense of how things work and what can be built. Even so, it didn't take long to get the gist. Though there aren't any real story elements or epic quests to conquer, the strong fantasy trappings instill a desire to adventure nonetheless. There's magic, monsters, and mayhem waiting both on the surface and in the dark caverns below. Uncovering unexpected new prizes and perils is a big part of the game's charm.

The entire game world is destructible, and breaking block lets you collect core resources like stone, wood, and iron that can be used to make cool gear or build structures. Rarer resources are dropped when you slay skeletons, floating fanged critters, and other monsters or when you dig deeper into the subterranean underworld. Since such a large portion of Terraria's gameplay revolves around foraging for different components and seeing what you can build with them, the drive to explore every nook and cranny of the landscape kicks in right away. But it's important to temper your desire to set out exploring in hopes of amassing huge quantities of loot with the pressing need to build shelter and expand your spawn point's home base.

Life on the surface follows a day/night cycle. Exploring topside during the daytime is safer - you can pick flowers, roam around, chop trees, and kill weak slimes that roam too close. It's also a perfect time to build houses that serve as shelter and attract helpful NPC characters to your settlement. Things get dicey when night falls; zombie hordes and floating eyeball beasts come out in droves, forcing you to fight or flee. That's less of an issue once you get a sturdy settlement started.

The village development aspect of the game is a clever addition - once you discover it exists. You can throw together bare-bones shacks or craft elaborate fortresses that tower upward into the heavens. Either way, you want to deck them out with enough accoutrements to lure NPCs to your village. These support characters can heal you, sell you items, and offer other helpful services. You have to complete a specific task to attract them, and even then they only appear if you've created a room (complete with walls, furniture, lighting, etc.) for them to stay. This offers some tangible incentives to spend time building, beyond the desire to lord over a large stronghold.

Dig, build and prepare for battle.

Having an elaborate and ever-expanding home base to return to on the surface is satisfying. However, the dark, foreboding underworld is where the real action is. Everything you need to make the most basic items like torches, furniture, and healing potions can be found near the surface, but you have to adventure deep below to uncover the rarest materials. This is where Terraria's gameplay feels more like an old-school action platformer and where it really sunk its hooks into me. Digging for ore eventually uncovers sprawling caverns that are home to many varieties of creepy creatures. Giant slimes, skeletons, burrowing worms, and tougher beasties roam the dark, and they often come charging at you while you're excavating. Exploring is a lot fun on its own, yet it's the strong emphasis on combat that's really appealing. For one thing, stopping to battle monsters breaks up the monotony of digging. Creatures also drop coins that can be used to buy shop items. There's an added risk versus reward element to combat too. Getting killed causes you to re-spawn on the surface with your gear intact, but you'll leave a chunk of your precious coin stash behind.

The real impetus behind adventuring is driven by the insanely deep gear crafting system. Almost everything you pick up in the game is a component used in forging some crucial piece of kit. There are well over a hundred different weapons and items to build. Though some equipment is more functional - like protective armor, grappling hooks that lets you navigate with greater ease, and treasure chests for storing loot - most of the stuff designed for cleaving monsters into itty bits is just sheer badass. Magical boomerangs, laser pistols, spell books that shoot fireballs, light sabers, and ninja stars are just a handful of the crazier weapons you can build. Hunting down the rare items you need to build the best weapons is obsession forming.

Set up housing and vendors will move in.

A few other cool nuances enhance the absorbing tasks of exploring, building, and battling away. Journey to the farther reaches of the surface world, and you'll inevitably run into The Corruption - a teeming mass of demonic turf filled with extra danger and extra rewards. You'll also uncover demonic altars for forging special items that can be used to summon one of the game's three spectacular bosses to fight (sporting awesome names like "Skeletron" and "Eater of Worlds"). Terraria's multiplayer mode is a blast too. Co-operatively exploring and building with friends or strangers is even more enjoyable than going solo, depending on the folks you play with. Finding an open public server to play on is a real drag, since most fill up within minutes of being posted on the game's forum. The good news is you can create your own server and share it with your pals (or post it online for others to join).

The Verdict
Though on the surface it looks like just another "me too" indie game seeking to ride the coattails of Minecraft's success, Terraria expands on the familiar sandbox gameplay with a greater emphasis on combat and adventure that proves very satisfying. Fresh elements &#Array; like an absurdly expansive weapon crafting system, a broader scope of monsters to battle, and a slick retro 2D presentation &#Array; make it a stand out among the pack. Hell, it took all the resolve I could muster just to shut the game down long enough to write this review. That's rare indeed.

Let me begin by saying that I kept seeing this game over and over and over again as being in the top games on ipad and kindle....I gave it a shot and wow I was impressed

See I played minecraft on the kindle but I found it slow , kinda boring and more of a building game and I wanted adventure and more purpose. This game gave me that.

The game itself has delightful music that changes between different areas of the game you explore. The game is open world as you can explore all the way to the depths of the underworld or go up and explore a sky area. At the moment the game itself does not have a hard mode so less then half the content from the pc version isn't on here ....yet. Hopefully with a new update we can get all the content that exists in the pc as it adds a lot more items, weapons and bosses.

There go another thing about this game , bosses ! If you aren't ready you will get creamed easily but the game isn't going to hold your hand about it either. You have to explore , dig, fight and craft your way to winning these battles and find the right weapons and armor that pertain to you as a player.

The games controls can be a touch sensitive but are for the most part very responsive. It utilizes a left virtual joystick (only appears when you touch the tablet on the left side and a Right virtual joystick. Most everything else if something you have to tap to do such as crafting an item. The controls are more fluid into he console and Pc version (yes this game was that good I bought the console version)

Its good to note some things in this game:

-No hard more

-It will generate a small map every time (check the Terraria Wiki) On console and pc you can choose the size of the map but that's okay as this allows for resources to be mined faster If the world was too large it can take several minutes up to an hour to reach certain areas

-The difficulty in general seems lower then console or PC

-Bosses are optional but if you want good stuff you have to beat them.

-You can create up to 3 worlds and 3 characters - Each world is randomly generated but you create your own character

-If you delete your world you lose all items left behind but if you character is not deleted you remain with any items on your person.

-There are only 10 hearts you can go to and half the mana from pc and console ( I assume this will go up with new update)

All in all I think this is a great pick up and play game , I play it on my ride on the train to work and back , kids will like it but may need some assistance early on slight warning there is I guess pixelated blood but not a crazy amount just a little bit upon enemy or character death - It is funny when you die as a tombstone describing why you died pops up like "Rob tried to swim in lava" you can pick them up and change them if you like

I haven't tried multiplayer as I don't know anyone else with another kindle as the game is only multi through similar devices. I assume though that it would be good as the console version is great with multiplayer.

There are tons and tons and tons of items to get and pets that you can have , several enemies , and a huge amount of cartable items that you can create amazing weapons OR simply decorate your own house or castle. I was shocked at the amount of stuff this one game can have

For $5.00 its well worth it esp since they will update up to 1.2 soon which adds a crazy amount of content.

Here are some player tips :

1-Chop wood up right away and build your home and build a background wall made of wood , if you run out the acorn makes more trees when planted.
2-Chests can be taken once you loot them this saves you time of making your own- simply hammer them or use the pickaxe to dig under them.
3- Be wary of the items you pick up as you may find a similar weapon but with better attributes
4-Watch for falling stars at night
5-Craft a full set of armor and Hammer right away ( full sets of armor head, chest, legs, will give you bonuses)

Download and enjoy !

Great game. It has hours of fun . I downloaded this on a kindle fire and it runs smoothly and well. If your a minecraft fan this is definitely the game for you. It is a sandbox 2d world where you have to get better tools and items and defeat evil bosses and monsters. The game never finishes so you can have fun on it for years on end! Customisable characters- evil monsters- friendly npcs - pets - hell - heavenly floating islands - dungeons - impressive large structures - billions of treasure to find in the natural caves and loads more!!! You never know what you might find. The controls are easy to use. And it also has cloud back up so that you won't lose your worlds. Well worth the money I have been addicted to it since the second I stepped into my first world. It has more to do than minecraft but is probably a bit more structured even though the game gives you a lot of freedom. I recommend anyone who's a gamer should buy it. No problems on a kindle fire hd 7"
