#1. Paul, Linda, and Denny are on the front cover of the 50th Anniversary release. THIS IS UNIQUE. For 50 years prior, we have been staring at a band of characters up against a brick wall under spotlight on the front cover. They retained the brick wall photo/image; but, for this release, it was saved for the Disc 1 sleeve.
#2. There is no mention of "Paul McCartney & Wings" on the front or the spine of this release. You have to flip the case over to the back to catch the name of the artists. The front reads "Band on the Run" in beautiful cursive script! The spine reads, "BAND ON THE RUN" in bold block print. Tiny mpl "Juggler" logo included!
#3. The 2-CD release is in a 3-panel WHITE cardboard case. This release is in stark contrast to the 25th Anniversary release (which was in all BLACK outer case). 50th Anniversary packaging is all white, black lettering, and legacy front images of the 3 people who majorly contributed to this milestone album (Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney (RIP), and Denny Laine (RIP).
#4. Disc 1 is black in color with photo images (same photos as on the outer cover). Disc 2 is white in color with track listing in black lettering (BOTR "Rough Mixes" / "Underdubbed"). Disc 2 mixed by legendary Geoff Emerick.
#5. In the USA, they have been distributing the 2-CD version sealed in shrinkwrap with beautiful front, red, circular hype sticker with white lettering. Sticker reads, "50th Anniversary 2CD"... (including "Linda McCartney Polaroid poster"). Back of package, there are 2 additional white and black stickers : "A Capital Records release" (side note, it is great to see Paul back at home with Capitol!), and "Made in Germany".
#6. In case you are wondering about sound quality, IT IS SPECTACULAR! Crisp, brilliant, full of depth and range, excellent separation of instruments and vocals. DISCS INDICATE THESE PRESSINGS ARE MADE BY "OPTIMAL MEDIA" GROUP, Germany. For those in the know, the name is no misnomer! OUTSTANDING SONICS from a standard CD! We have compared the sound quality of these discs against the more expensive Japanese SHM discs for the same release - we prefer the sound of the Optimal Media discs!!!
#7. Linda McCartney (and Paul) documented the BOTR sessions / Lagos trip with a Polaroid camera. Don't know what a Polaroid camera is? - google it! She compiled a whopping 82 images into a beautiful archival 2-sided poster! IMPRESSIVE!!! It features Paul, Linda, Denny, and friends at work (mostly play!). It is folded and included in the center panel of this release.
#8. The Underdubbed mixes (Paul's nomenclature) are another brilliant facet of this landmark release! The rough mixes showcase the genius and skill of the songwriter / artists before subsequent studio layerings. Very enjoyable listening and a unique BOTR experience after all these years! The Rough Mixes also shine a light on the remarkable talents of individuals such as TONY VISCONTI (who helped make the original release so historic)!!! The Rough Mixes were / are an excellent choice for the 50th Anniversary release.
#9. There were 9 notable luminaries who were captured on the original BOTR cover artwork (including Paul, Linda, and Denny). While the group shot is a fixture amongst legendary rock album covers, only Paul, Linda, and Denny contributed to the history-making music! "1985", "Helen Wheels", "Mrs Vandebilt", "Jet", "Let Me Roll It", "No Words", "Band On the Run" and more! This is a cornerstone rock release that has aged very well. Well, where did 50 years go??? Of the 9 individuals on the original album cover making up the "band" of escapees, only SIR PAUL and John Conteh are still alive. The others are no longer "on the run"...
#10. The 50th Anniversary version of BOTR is a LIMITED release. Get it! Amazon has the best price out there. You are guaranteed to enjoy it for the next 50 years!
Paul, Linda (RIP) and Denny Laine (RIP) were preparing to go to Africa to record the latest Wings albums when Henry McCulloch (guitar) and Denny Seiwell (drums) told Paul they were leaving the band. The trio still flew to Africa and found a barely finished recording EMI studio, Paul got mugged with the robbers taking all his demo tapes (one of the reasons demos have never been released for "Band on the Run"), Paul suffered a severe panic attack believing he was dying. Engineer Geoff Emerick managed to help turn this mess into a great album with his engineering skills. The sessions were completed (with Ginger Baker playing percussion on one track as they arranged to record a little bit at his studio as well) and they returned to England for overdubbing and final mixing.
What did they record in Africa? Most of that is here on the "underdubbed" mix which doesn't feature the extensive overdubs or orchestral overdubs done for the album to finish it. It's presented as a rough mix which is the closest we will ever get to hear what it might have sounded like in early form. Is it a big difference? For some tracks more than others but the more important question is this essential? Only if you are a huge McCartney fan.
The first disc has the American version (which had "Helen Wheels" added to it to help bolster sales so there is no "under dubbed" version simply because it wasn't intended to be on the album and it featured the entire band on it before they quit). It's a nice remaster though hardly an improvement on the previous remaster.
The second disc features rough mixes of every song on the album. "Band on the Run" is interesting because Tony Visconti's string arrangement isn't there. "Jet" also rocks in rough form perhaps even more than the finished, polished track. Vocals are a bit more prominent here. Backing vocals aren't quite as sweetened here and some are even missing. "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" (one of my favorite tracks) features no lead vocal but backing vocals. "Let Me Roll It" is also a stand out with a rougher, raw sound to it that compliments the song. Often overlooked, "Picasso's Last Words" was written on a dare from Dustin Hoffman who was there shooting a movie and met McCartney; he challenged him to create something spur of the moment so McCartney did. He came up with the concept of "Picasso's Last Words" and managed to turn it into the aural equivalent of one of Picasso's paintings with it's fractured structure creating a musical suite of sorts. It's a marvelous song and Laine does a great job of singing it.
The packaging is a triple gatefold sleeve with lyrics on the inside along with a replica of the original poster (though I would have preferred a booklet with history on the rough mixes and why different decisions were made for the mix). Each disc is housed in a cardboard sleeve. The album proper is in a single cardboard sleeve with a replica of the original artwork while the second disc is in a cardboard sleeve that uses one of the Visa outtake images as its cover.
"Band on the Run" is still a towering achievement for McCartney in the 70's; he had both financial and critical success with the album. It sold more than any other McCartney album to that point. After the interesting but uneven "Red Rose Speedway", it also demonstrated that, even in adversity, that McCartney hadn't lost his songwriting instincts. He also had the perfect "concept" for the album with it literally being about a band on the run and in search of freedom. In this case, McCartney, McCartney and Laine achieved that freedom with a terrific album that is, from start to finish, a masterpiece.
Is it essential? No but for McCartney nerds (like myself), it is great to have. I wouldn't have packaged this with another remaster of the original album (that just adds to the cost) but released it on its own.
Made by the same fellows in UK and Germany who did the 50th "The Beatles Red and Blue" vinyl presses. I did a lengthier review on those two albums. Great remix, pressing and packaging on this vinyl. Barely perceptible vinyl track noise between cuts, non existent during song play..
If you are a McCartney/Wings fan you need to buy this album, even if you have an older copy. One of his best and the remix blows me away. If you haven’t listened to it before, you will love it. It is an infectious record and I’ve played it over and over since I got it. I always record the first vinyl play digitally with 192KHz/32-bit float so the record stays pristine til the next time. (Reel-to-reel and cassette in the past – yeah I’m old). Then I mix it down for my phone and Bluetooth devices.
My first ½ speed vinyl recording and totally worth it. Saw Wings in St. Paul in 1976 during the “Wings Over America” tour. Heard most of these songs live at that time. Best concert for me ever and I’ve seen plenty. (Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon” tour 1973 in Denver is my second favorite).
Hope you enjoy this album as much as I do.

I still have that vinyl album (and poster) but I wanted a re-mastered version on CD. I decided on this American version because it features Helen Wheels, which was not on the UK version. This set comes with an interesting second CD featuring all the songs (except Helen Wheels) in their rough mix versions before the additional instruments and effects were added. It also comes with a reproduction of Linda McCartney's original photo montage poster which was included with the original 1973 release.
All the tracks sound brilliant in their re-mastered form, and it is wonderful to keep looking at that iconic cover. A superb re-mastered set which should please fans of this great album.

Ich hatte auf eine Originale US Version gehofft. 5 Sterne weil das Produkt gut ist, aber Amazon sollte den Anzeigentext überarbeiten.
