Top review from the United States

While the letters between these two Joyce scholars are the main attraction, a fascinating subplot about the growth of the Joyce industry emerges, aided by Dr. Burns’s detailed notes. In the late 1940s, Joyce was still persona non grata in some quarters, such as the University of Toronto, which told Kenner that “if he wanted to ‘squander’ his talents on Joyce, he had better go elsewhere” (p. xi). In the early ’50s, Joyce enthusiasts were still exchanging findings by mail (such as the two protagonists of this book), but Joyce scholarship took off in the late 1950s. Glasheen and Kenner give an insider’s look at how it all happened, with lots of catty comments about professional Joyceans, few of whom emerge unscathed.
