Umakoshi Yoshihiko was born July 30, 1968 in Ehime, Japan. He is an animation director and character designer.
After graduating from Toei Animation Institute he started working at Monsieur Onion. During that time he made himself a name for the character designs in Marmalade Boy and Hana Yori Dango, which he provided. Later he left and joined Studio Cockpit, together with another Ehime-born Monsieur Onion animator,
Kagawa Hisashi. During most of his career he was involved working on shows by Toei Animation. A book by the title
Umakoshi Yoshihiko Toei Animation Works that centred around his major work in the 2000s was released in Japan on July 20, 2011. Several former Studio Cockpit animators who learned under him later founded
Studio Shiokaze.
Umakoshi is known for his variety as animator. Superb action sequences, as well as the ability to display effective and realistic movement in daily life on a high level, make him an allrounder in the animation field.
In 2011 Umakoshi received the
Tokyo Anime Fair Character Designer Award for his work on
Heartcatch Precure!.
