A Brief History
Part Six - Fighting Fifties
Falkirk started the decade poorly and finshed bottom of Division A in season 1950-51. The club again stayed down for only one season and were promoted as runners-up to Clyde who pipped the Bairns to the title by a single point.
For the next few seasons Falkirk finished in the lower half of the division and constantly battled against relegation. In December 1956, Bob Shankley resigned from his position as manager with the club bottom of the league and favourites for the drop. The club brought in Reggie Smith (far right) from Dundee United and he promptly turned the club's fortunes around. Not only did he save the club from relegation but he guided Falkirk to their second Scottish Cup triumph, beating a strong Kilmarnock side in a final replay.
The club built on the cup success the following season and finished in a comfortable mid-table position but by the end of the decade they were again relegated to Division Two.
