On June 11th, 2024, David K. Nelson passed away at the age of 62 in Salt Lake City. Q Salt Lake has published a thorough obituary about Nelson’s life, activism and accomplishments. While his work for the LGBTQIA+ community is well documented, his archival contributions have been a great addition to the J. Willard Marriott Library’s Special Collections.  

Join us in celebrating the growth of the intellectual property intensive industry in Utah. The event will feature Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The 2024 Floyd O’Neil Marriott Library Research Fellowship, a $3,500 donor-supported award that facilitates scholarly exploration with the library’s Special Collections, was awarded to Val Holley. Holley is delving into a captivating group biography, Slouching Towards Gotham, exploring the journeys of mid-twentieth-century gay members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as they moved from rural America to Manhattan.

When the name of Western Americana, Rare Books, and University Archives was changed to Special Collections in 1971, it reflected a shift in the holdings at the newly constructed J. Willard Marriott Library. The Middle East Library had been established alongside the Middle East Studies program in 1959 with the arrival of Aziz Suryal Atiya.
