Statistics & Data Hub
The BPCnet.org Statistics & Data Hub brings together different sources of publicly-available data to support PIs and Departments in creating their BPC Plans. The Tools section contains BPCnet.org-created web apps that summarize some of these public datasets and links to other similar tools from the computing community. The Data section lists other useful public datasets, allowing PIs and Departments to access data more specific to their context.
Overview of Patterns of Underrepresentation in Computing
The following communities have documented patterns of underrepresentation in computing and closely-related disciplines: People who identify as disabled, women, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and/or Other Pacific Islanders.
According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, only 9.9% of 2021 doctorate recipients in computer and information sciences identified as having a disability in 2021 (see Figure 7-10). Outside of science and engineering disciplines, disabled people represent 13.3% of doctoral recipients. More information is available about challenges in collecting data regarding students with disabilities (link).
According to 2021 graduation data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS, see summary data and by gender and by race/ethnicity), the representation of the following communities among undergraduate degree recipients in computing and closely-related fields are lower than their representation among other undergraduate degree earners in the US: women (21% in computing vs. 59% overall), Black students (8% in computing vs. 10% overall), Hispanic students (11% in computing vs. 16% overall), American Indian or Alaska Native students (0.2% in computing vs. 0.5% overall), Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander students (0.20% in computing vs. 0.21% overall).
BPCnet BPC Indicators Report
BPCnet publishes a report that contains summaries of data on computing degrees awarded from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and on early career faculty from the CRA Taulbee Survey. The focus of this report is to display racial/ethnic and gender composition of individuals who were awarded higher education degrees in computing and early career faculty in higher education.
