The Chicago Reader continually accepts applications for future openings for Media Sales Representatives.

As part of the Reader team, you’ll work in an exciting industry with an unlimited earning potential, and have the support of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic management team.

Sales Representative responsibilities include selling print, digital, and events to local businesses.

Our Sales Representatives typically have:

  • Understanding of media/advertising products, including print and digital.
  • Media and advertising experience— If you have not worked as a seller of media, you have been a buyer, marketing manager, or media coordinator.
  • A minimum of two years of sales OR similar/transferable experience. Retail sales experience is not considered similar or transferable.
  • Working knowledge and experience utilizing a CRM (Salesforce preferred), Slack, and Google Suite products to manage day-to-day activities
  • Effective relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated success in meeting revenue goals
  • Excellent analytical, written, oral, communication, and presentation skills
  • The ability to multitask with strong time and project management skills

Ideal candidates will also:

  • Have a demonstrated ability to act as a qualified marketing consultant (you can talk the talk when it comes to advertising strategy and marketing goals)
  • Possess working relationships with advertisers in Chicago, (health, real estate, and financial categories preferred)
  • Excel at maintaining quotas and deadlines related to sales outreach and sales activity overall
  • Understand and be excited about prospecting and building new business categories

The available compensation packages vary (based on full or part time), and include salary, commission, and health benefits.

Internships with RICJ and the Chicago Reader

The Reader Institute for Community Journalism (RICJ), publisher of the Chicago Reader, offers paid internship opportunities to enthusiastic and qualified candidates. 

Placements are often available in various departments: editorial; art; marketing, communications, and engagement; growth and media sales; grants and development; and general operations including circulation and human resource management.

Interns report directly to a member of our leadership team and will work with RICJ staff. These are multifaceted positions with day-to-day adventures and assignments that may change. We desire someone who is flexible and interested in gaining knowledge by working for a nonprofit local media organization. 

Students in degree-seeking programs and others who want an introduction to the world of journalism are encouraged to apply.

Desired skills (not all required, but your experience will help):   

  • General: ability to work remotely and manage time effectively, researching, general administrative tasks, flexibility
  • Specific to Art interns: photography, illustration, data visualization, sourcing and coordinating permissions and licensing, image processing for print and web, archive research, Adobe Suite
  • Specific to Editorial interns: writing, interviewing, data gathering, data processing, research, transcription. Editorial department interns are allowed to pitch stories and will be able to add to their writing portfolio. They also assist staff writers and editors on ongoing projects and investigations.
  • Specific to Marketing/Communications/Engagement interns: newsletters, engagement campaigns, working across departments, maintaining content calendars, providing on-site support at community events and RICJ activations, Mailchimp, multimedia production tools (audio, video)

Requirements for all:

  • Much of the work will be remote but must be located in the Chicago area, as some in-person meetings and events will require your presence
  • Must be able to attend scheduled required meetings and check-ins with the supervisor
  • Must have access to a personal computer 
  • Must be familiar with Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom
  • Must be able to communicate concerns effectively and be inquisitive
  • Be kind and friendly 
  • Have a sense of humor
  • Must have an interest in nonprofits and/or local journalism 
  • Must have a keen interest in Chicago!

Compensation: The salary ranges from $19-$22 per hour, and no benefits are offered for this position.  

Time requirement and dates for next opening: A 20-hour work week (Monday through Friday expected) will be required. Available programs:

  • Summer – May through June (6-weeks maximum) 
  • Winter – Aug/Sept through December (Full semester)
  • Spring – January through May (Full semester)
