There’s joy in toon town today as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing animated movie ever at the worldwide box office. With $1,462.8M through Tuesday, the sequel has surpassed Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen II ($1.454B). Disney has seven of the Top 10 animated movies ever globally, five of which are from Pixar.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 has also moved up the overall all-time global chart, now at No. 13, behind Top Gun: Maverick, and having surpassed Barbie ($1.446B) on Monday.
The current international box office cume through Tuesday is $861.8M, landing it at No. 20 on the all-time overseas chart. IO2 still has Japan to release, on August 1.
Watch on Deadline
IO2 has been on a tear since it began offshore rollout on June 12, and domestic on June 14. At the time, the launch weekend logged the biggest opening for an animated movie worldwide at $295M (when using current exchange rates and in like-for-like markets).

In short order, it topped the $1B global milestone, getting there in just 19 days — the quickest time to the mark for an animated movie ever. It is the highest-grossing film of 2024 to date, and the only one to cross $1B so far. In early July, IO2 became Pixar’s highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
It is also the overall No. 1 film in industry history in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay.
The Top 5 overseas markets through Tuesday are: Mexico ($98.6M), Brazil ($73.9M), UK ($61.2M), Korea ($56.5M) and France ($52.3M).
As we have previously noted, Disney’s 2019 The Lion King is not considered an animated film by the studio which made it under the Disney Live Action umbrella, rather than either of its animated labels.

You are wrong. The number 1 animated movie us the Lion King remake. It is computer generated! It may look live action but it is absolutely animated.
Like the article explains, Lion King is live action.
What about The Lion King? Boxofficemojo showing it at $1,663,079,059

Dose not matter what Disney considers it or what branch to was produced under. It is either animated or it is not. Every single thing in the Lion King is computer generated and animated.
And who made you the expert. Besides the Lion King has long finished it’s theatrical run, Inside Out 2 is still in theaters. Give it a rest.
Your life must be very empty to fill it with such hatred…
In my small town, our cinema had sold out screenings constantly for 2 weeks!
Not to mention that Inside Out 2 totally deserves that…
Likely true, if Disney were to intentionally lie about BO numbers that would be tantamount to fraudulence in reporting and open them up to highly unwelcome legal liabilities .
Of more relevance is the fact that any raw box office numbers do not account for inflation implying that this film still has not surpassed the actual ticket sales of some of the films in the top 50
That’s true. Is there a reason it’s worth keeping in mind, aside from perhaps being able to get a question right at a future pub-trivia event?
