Macroeconomic effect

[edit]

I find this campaign very interesting. I was wondering if it did have any effect on the economy, GDP, etc... ? I think that would be a good and interesting addition to this article. Rej5y7 (talk) 15:49, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to find any analysis of the economic effects but could only come up with the anecdotal report of Supermarkets from March. It was presumably too difficult for anyone to ascribe macroeconomic changes to something which was a fairly nebulous and loosely-linked campaign in the first place. 1968 saw a series of public spending cuts and a tax raising budget, but the British economy did recover quite significantly, especially in exports. All of this would probably have happened anyway. Sam Blacketer (talk) 16:18, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

McCartney's "Back in the U.S.S.R."

[edit]

Can anyone provide some believable backup for the statement that "Paul McCartney thought the campaign was ridiculous and it inspired him to write a song called "I'm Backing the UK", which eventually became "Back in the U.S.S.R.""? The claim is wicked funny, I like it, and I want to be true :). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.198.151.44 (talk) 12:11, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It may be just wicked. The "suggestion has been made" by music critic Ian MacDonald in his 2005 book "Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties" - see the "Back in the U.S.S.R." article. The dates kind of fit, except that McCartney was in India from February 1968, for a month and it might be a bit unlikely he cared much about Harold Wilson, or any such domestic news, at the time. But it's possible he only chose the title when he returned to UK. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:33, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Citation

[edit]

This page is cited by the report into Jimmy Saville's activities at Stoke Mandeville, in footnote 195: http://www.speakingoutinvestigation.com/Downloads/Speaking%20out%20investigation/2902210_Investigation%20into%20the%20Association%20of%20Jimmy%20Savile%20with%20Stoke%20Mandeville%20Hospital.pdf

They don't cite a stable version of the page though, just give the URL for the current continuously-updated page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.59.41 (talk) 07:47, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
