Despite the vast majority of reliable and politically neutral sources referring to the penguins as "gay" ([1][2][3][4][5]), I intentionally chose not to refer to the penguins as "gay" in this article, which is already a compromise that I feel I shouldn't be making. This article even notes that conservative voices disagreed with the penguins being referred to as "gay". It doesn't matter whether the penguins can be considered "gay" or not, the fact is that they became a symbol of the Australian gay rights movement, which is what made these penguins notable in the first place.
