Etymology

From Old Japanese. Compound of 率りつ(い) (i, 連れん(れん)用よう(よう)形かたち(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 率りつ(い)る (iru, “to be accompanied with”)) + 寝ね(ぬ) (nu, “(archaic) to sleep”). Not to be confused with 寝ね(い)ぬ (inu).
