First attested in the Worin seokbo (つきしるししゃく / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 굿〮 (Yale: kwús).

Etymology 2

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (しゃくしょうぶし / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: kwut). Possibly an ancient borrowing from Old Chinese くつ (OC *kʰluːd, “hole; cave”).[1] The Sino-Korean reading is (くつ, gul), also a common Korean word.
