TORONTO – The British comedy Cockneys vs. Zombies and the Soska twins’ surgical horror thriller American Mary were the big winners at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, which wrapped on Friday.
Matthias Hoene‘s film about east London robbers in the middle of a zombie outbreak took the top audience award in Toronto, and was named best comedy and best ensemble cast for star-turns by Georgina King, Alan Ford and Honor Blackman.
The home entertainment group Shout! Factory picked up the North American rights to Cockneys vs. Zombies at AFM this past week.
And American Mary from Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska picked up six awards in the specialty categories, including best director, best actress and best Canadian feature.
Other multiple winners in Toronto included Japanese director Noboru Iguchi’s splatter comedy Dead Sushi named as the runner-up in the top audience award competition, along with craft awards like best trailer and best special effects.
And Resolution, from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, won four awards, including best screenplay and most innovative film, while Claron Foy‘s Citadel, the tower block horror thriller, picked up three awards, including best horror film and scariest film.
