The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (IceCube) is a research facility at the South Pole in Antarctica. IceCube is maintained and operated by the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and other international funders. Scientific analysis is performed around the world by members of our international IceCube Collaboration.
Referring to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory
On first reference, our full name should be used: the IceCube Neutrino Observatory; thereafter, it can be shortened to IceCube (one word with the second C capitalized). IceCube is not an acronym; there are no official acronyms for IceCube. Any other variation of our name should not be capitalized:
- IceCube neutrino telescope
- IceCube South Pole neutrino observatory
- IceCube neutrino detector
- IceCube observatory
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is our official name and refers to the entire facility, including the in-ice detector. As shortened, IceCube can refer to the entire facility or to a given component. Correct usage includes:
- IceCube is made up of 5,160 sensors in ice.
- IceCube published a paper in Science.
- IceCube discovered a neutrino coming from a blazar.
When referencing the IceCube Collaboration as a group, we capitalize both words as a proper name.
Related IceCube projects are formatted as indicated:
- IceCube Upgrade
- Capitalize “Upgrade” when referring to this specific project.
- IceCube-Gen2
- Use a hyphen between “IceCube” and “Gen2”; no space or hyphen between Gen and 2.
Social media
IceCube has social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
