Do you use Wikidata in Wikimedia sibling projects? Tell us about your experiences[edit source]

Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English.

Hello, the Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects team at Wikimedia Deutschland would like to hear about your experiences using Wikidata in the sibling projects. If you are interested in sharing your opinion and insights, please consider signing up for an interview with us in this Registration form.
Currently, we are only able to conduct interviews in English.

The front page of the form has more details about what the conversation will be like, including how we would compensate you for your time.

For more information, visit our project issue page where you can also share your experiences in written form, without an interview.
We look forward to speaking with you, Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 08:53, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?[edit source]

Apologies for writing in English.

The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.

  • The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
  • Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
  • Compensation is available.
  • Sessions will be held in January and February.
  • Sign up here if you are interested.
  • Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.

We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)

Feminism and Folklore 2024[edit source]

Please help translate to your language

Dear Wiki Community,

You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.

You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.

Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:

  1. Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
  2. Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
  3. Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
  4. Request local admins for site notice.
  5. Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.

This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools

Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.

We look forward to your immense coordination.

Thank you and Best wishes,

Feminism and Folklore 2024 International Team

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection[edit source]

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Dear all,

This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.

The Elections Committee will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].

Here are the key planned dates:

  • May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
  • June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
  • June-August 2024: Campaign period
  • End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
  • October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
  • Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated

Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on this Meta-wiki page, and make your plan.

Election Volunteers

Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this Meta-wiki page.

Best regards,

Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

Sign up for the language community meeting on May 31st, 16:00 UTC[edit source]

Hello all,

The next language community meeting is scheduled in a few weeks - May 31st at 16:00 UTC. If you're interested, you can sign up on this wiki page.

This is a participant-driven meeting, where we share language-specific updates related to various projects, collectively discuss technical issues related to language wikis, and work together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, the topics included the machine translation service (MinT) and the languages and models it currently supports, localization efforts from the Kiwix team, and technical challenges with numerical sorting in files used on Bengali Wikisource.

Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates related to your project? Any problems that you would like to bring for discussion during the meeting? Do you need interpretation support from English to another language? Please reach out to me at ssethi(__AT__)wikimedia.org and add agenda items to the document here.

We look forward to your participation!

Feedback invited on Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle[edit source]

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Please help translate to your language

Dear community members,

The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees invites you to give feedback on a draft Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle. This draft Procedure outlines proposed steps and requirements for opening and closing Wikimedia Sibling Projects, and aims to ensure any newly approved projects are set up for success. This is separate from the procedures for opening or closing language versions of projects, which is handled by the Language Committee or closing projects policy.

You can find the details on this page, as well as the ways to give your feedback from today until the end of the day on June 23, 2024, anywhere on Earth.

You can also share information about this with the interested project communities you work with or support, and you can also help us translate the procedure into more languages, so people can join the discussions in their own language.

Wild idea[edit source]

Ten years ago, when I was an admin here, the thought occurred to me that we might as well open up the Novial Wikipedia for similar language projects. At present, there are requests to create Wikipedias in Interglossa and Neo. A similar request for Glosa was rejected. In addition, there are wikis for languages like Idiom Neutral, Intal, Glosa, Uropi, Latino Sine Flexione and Novlingue at Fandom (former Wikicities and Wikia). Every now and then, someone decides to revive some forgotten or near-dead auxlang, creates some content in it, then loses interest, and ultimately the project dies. Sooner or later, the work done by these people is going to disappear. Minor auxlangs like these are simply too small to successfully develop a separate Wikipedia project. And as we all know, feelings about constructed languages are not always favourable, to put it mildly. Besides, since all these auxlangs are essentially based on the same linguistic material and mutually intelligible, one might easily consider them dialects of the same language.

Hence my question: would it be an idea to allow users of other Euroclones (excluding those that already have their own Wikipedia, of course) to create articles here? Every page could carry a template that says which language it is and places it in a special category. Some Wikipedias already work like that, for example the Ligurian and Alemannic editions. It's even possible to have the same article in multiple languages. In my opinion, this solution would have several advantages: it could generate some extra activity over here, and in addition, it will put an end to fruitless deletion discussions and hopeless requests for new projects. It can easily be done, too: it's simply something the local community can decide, so no discussions and decisions from outside are needed. What do you think? Cheers, IJzeren Jan 13:42, 2 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This would be against the rules and makes no sense if these languages have no relation to Novial. The dialects of Novial itself like Novilingue can be present, but not other ones like Glossa or LsF. Wikipedia would not allow new small constructed languages. The Novial Wikipedia has more articles than many other Wikipedias and it has stabilized recently and Novial still has follower in contrast to the languages you mentioned. KardonaBoske (talk) 21:52, 2 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's not necessarily against the rules. When people ask for a Wikipedia in some dialect, they often the answer: go to language X and ask if it's okay to write in that dialect too. It's up to the local community, basically. And you probably know that Novial was partly based on (or at least inspired by) Idiom Neutral, and that Intal is partly based on Novial. It's one big family of interrelated language projects, really, although you are right that Glosa and LSF are more remote. But don't worry, it was just a suggestion and I'm certainly not going to push it. Cheers, IJzeren Jan 22:46, 2 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't go against the rules, but I don't know what to say. Nobody is going to write articles in Novlingue because the author has abandoned the project. I would keep the wiki in Glosa aside, as it is alive given the fact that Gary Miller (Tweety^0809) is editing it every single week. I don't think the author of Uropi would agree with this, he himself is quite busy, just translating the grammar of Elefen sentence by sentence and it is taking him a long time (I don't know who else speaks the language). The wiki of LsF was created to keep all articles found on the internet on one place but after gathering them, nobody has done anything. I cannot speak for Idiom Neutral and Intal, but the wiki in IN was edited by the same person that is now busy with the project in Neo, so I wouldn't give him more jobs now. I don't now of anybody that speaks Intal, nor the wiki has been edited for a while.
Those are my thoughts, but maybe others disagree. IMHO, I would suggest to focus on the wikis in Interslavic, Novial and Neo, and if anybody want to write in any of the abovementioned languages, he can go to those fandom wikis. Only the one in Glosa is active so I wouldn't really bother even moving that one. Jon Gua (talk) 07:35, 3 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After reading this, I would suggest a new wikipedia, like euroclone.wikipedia.org, for articles in languages other than IE, IA and NOV, like IN and Neo, maybe LsF and other Pan-Romance languages. I believe that, by gathering all those languages together on one project, it would have people working every day. Something like this wiki. Jon Gua (talk) 11:23, 3 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt you can do it as official Wikipedia, but as fandom Wiki. Uropi is not really a euroclon and not understandable for speakers of Novial. KardonaBoske (talk) 21:37, 3 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Problem with Fandom is that it is stuffed with advertizing and it doesn't even remotely remind of what it used to be in the past. For me, that was a reason to leave it. Miraheze is a good alternative, though. Orain was very nice as well, but then... *pufff* it was suddenly gone, including all the work that had been done since the last dump. That's why I am always a bit sceptical about commercial wiki farms. IJzeren Jan 22:20, 3 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you help me translating the rest of the rest of Wikipedia menu in Novial? How can I do this? KardonaBoske (talk) 21:28, 4 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm the person editing the Neo (in part) and IN wikis, although I don't use Fandom for IN anymore, I recreated it on Miraheze (Ensiklopedi in Idiom Neutral), because I cannot cope with the adverts. I didn't set up the IN-Fandom page (so can't delete it), but I'm not going to be editing it anymore. I understand that Miraheze requires constant editing lest deletion should fall upon you, so I've been trying to edit at least once a day.
While a euroclone wikipedia would be nice, I think for languages like Idiom Neutral, which have not been used in earnest for over 100 years, there would need to be a community of speakers (not just me) that could come to agreement on new vocabulary, finer points of grammar etc. I'm happy keeping it on Miraheze to build up the articles, and if anything should come of this, I'll be ready to go! If not, I'll enjoy it for enjoyment's sake. Omnihom (talk) 21:31, 4 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did with some other people around 10 years ago a bit Idiom Neutral. There was even a short lived magazine in the internet. Its still a great language. Valodnieks (talk) 22:33, 4 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yes, I remember Vok Neutral and the work of Washirei – I didn't mean to suggest no one is earnestly using it, it was more a reflection on the paucity of speakers now for these much older auxlangs. A euroclone wikipedia would be nice, but there are very few people speaking these languages (IN, LsF, etc) in the same space, so building any sort of community that could have the discussions required to make it a viable, sustained project seems difficult. However, I suppose a centralised location could be better for building up those communities. Omnihom (talk) 01:17, 5 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can see, it would be better to leave the Novial Wikipedia just for Novial, and try to get a Neo Wikipedia. For other languages like Glosa, and LsF, let's leave them on their fandom wikis, because only one person dits the Glosa wiki and he is happy with that one, and nobody edits the LsF wiki. Could you please vote here, @IJzeren Jan? Jon Gua (talk) 06:43, 5 june 2024 (UTC)[reply]
