This coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) was planted in Capitol Park in Sacramento, California in April 1976 (April 20?). It is located by the northeast corner of the main Capitol building next to the security pavillion. The tree is about 120 feet tall with a canopy of approximately 40 feet. The pavillion plans were designed to ensure the tree's safety. The tree was featured on Huell Howser's "California's Gold" program in 2007.
The roughly 2-foot-high seedling was sent out from the Institute of Forest Genetics in Placerville, California, on 2 April 1976. The seeds for the coast redwoods were collected by the U.S. Forest Service near Soquel, California in 1966.
The tree is situated at 38° 34.616' N, 121° 29.581' W.
