American archaeologist and naturalist Charles C. Abbott was of the group of early archaeologists interested in determining the earliest human occupations of the New World; they surmised it was as old as the "old world" and sought artifacts similar to Paleolithic Europe, and failed at it. Abbott is best known as investigator of the Trenton Gravels site in New Jersey.
