A Court of Silver Flames (A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 156,670 ratings

Sarah J. Maas's sexy, richly imagined series continues with the journey of Feyre's fiery sister, Nesta.

Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can't seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it.

The one person who ignites her temper more than any other is Cassian, the battle-scarred warrior whose position in Rhysand and Feyre's Night Court keeps him constantly in Nesta's orbit. But her temper isn't the only thing Cassian ignites. The fire between them is undeniable, and only burns hotter as they are forced into close quarters with each other.

Meanwhile, the treacherous human queens who returned to the Continent during the last war have forged a dangerous new alliance, threatening the fragile peace that has settled over the realms. And the key to halting them might very well rely on Cassian and Nesta facing their haunting pasts.

Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance-and healing-in each other's arms.

I will say that this is my least favorite of this series. I know so many people love this book, I just am not one of those people. I think one of the main reasons I don't love this book is the fact that I am not a Nesta fan. I tried so hard with my reread of the series to try to like her more this time around, and while I did find some moments that made me like her they were all overshadowed by how awful she treated everyone. Like I get she has a hard past, but that is not an excuse for all the things that she did (even the things before the cauldron). I get that a lot of people see themselves in her, but that's just not me. And I don't want to hear "if you don't see yourself in her then you are just lying to yourself" because that is just not true. Not everyone has the same trauma responses, and you aren't going to feel connected with every character.Another thing that bugs me with this book is the fact that one of the biggest things that could happen to Feyre takes place and we don't get to go through that with her and Rhys. Like I am so sad that we will never get that story between Feyre and Rhys.I do love the friendship that Nesta builds with Gwyn and Emerie. I love that Nesta was able to make her own friends outside of the Inner Circle and that they are just hers. I do feel like she needed people who loved her for herself and not who she was connected to. I feel like Gwyn and Emerie are such strong characters and I can't wait to see more of them.I feel like Cassian is in such a difficult spot in this book. He is trying to defend the woman he loves against his High Lord and Lady and all of his friends, while Nesta is doing nothing to help her cause (at least during most of the book). And then he is having to defend his High Lord and Lady against the woman he loves. He is constantly being torn in two directions and to me Feyre is the only one who sees this and is the only one who tries to help alleviate that stress. I do miss seeing Cassian and Feyre's friendship in this book. In the other books you get to see how much they joke and how close they are with each other and in this book there just seems to be something holding both of them back from going all in with that friendship.

Oh, Sarah J. Maas, you've done it again with "A Court of Silver Flames"! I loved it so many great moments and the ending had my eyes watering. Did someone cut an onion up in here? 😜 I have so many spiraling theories of what is to come especially if you have read any other books by her 👀 Who else is spiraling here?

This book is a mesmerizing dance between characters, emotions, and the haunting echoes of a war-torn world. Nesta Archeron, the fiery and complex heroine, takes center stage, and it's a performance that leaves you wanting more. I will admit her character development has finally grown on me. Hoping that we see another side to her and Cassian as the series continues. Cannot wait for Elain's book!

Nesta's journey from a prickly High Fae struggling to find her place to a character wrestling with her demons is a rollercoaster of emotions. And the chemistry between Nesta and Cassian? The sparks, the tension, it's like a burning flame you can't look away from. Here for it!

Maas continues to weave a world where darkness and desire collide, and "A Court of Silver Flames" is no exception. The treacherous alliances, and the fragile peace hanging by a thread, are a testament to Maas's skill in crafting not just characters, but entire realms that feel alive with tension and intrigue. Seriously, how does she do it?!

There are so many crumbs in this book so if you are thinking of annotating parts - do it!

For fans of the A Court of Roses and Thorns series, this installment is a feast of emotions and revelations. It's not just a book; it's a journey into the depths of healing, acceptance, and the enduring power of love. A must-read for anyone enchanted by the magical realms Maas so brilliantly creates.✨📖🌌

Cannot wait for what is next! C'mon Jan 30th HOFAS!!!!

I never leave reviews. But for this book I HAD TO.
I was not a Nesta fan. At all. But this booked changed it for me. The character development is so good. You start off annoyed but throughout you come to see why Nesta is the way she is, and fall in love with her fight to overcome her trauma. Anyone who has faced abuse, as myself has, will relate to her in a way some may not. The growth Nesta encounters not just physically, but mentally and emotionally is encouraging to anyone who reads. This book also targets the power of friendship. Which will leave you just as emotional as the rest of the impactful moments. Nesta doesn’t just learn to love herself throughout the book, but she learns to love others, and embrace the love that captured even her human heart when she met cassian. This book definitely has more spice than the others in my opinion. Nesta also learns to forgive herself as well as owning up and overcoming her mistakes. Overall, the storyline, character development; and the powerful impactful moments will leave you crying, laughing and falling in love with not just Nesta but the entire night court all over again. ACOSF has become my favorite of the series. ❤️

My heart feels so full right now…

This was a story I was so looking forward to. It was everything I hoped it to be and so so much more.

From the first time Nesta and Cassian met you knew they were going to just as spectacular as Rhys and Freya.

I loved Nedra’s journey in this book, not just for herself or Cassian but her friendship with Gwen and Emerie. It was beautifully written right up until the end.

I loved how the book ended with the 3 sisters together. Simply beautiful.

This book has SO much good, and at least one serious issue.

I loved Nesta’s character development. In a lot of ways I cannot relate to her as a character and didn’t like her in the previous books. But in ACOSF that changed. After getting more insight into Nesta’s internal world, and watching her development, I actually love her character.

This story runs as a similar narrative to Fayre’s, but as a counterpoint. This is a character who deeply STRUGGLES through her trauma, struggles with her internal fire, and as a result, struggles in building connections to those closest to her.

I think this is an important point about trauma recovery (speaking as someone recovering from major trauma) - we all process things differently. At different speeds. And different people react to healing differently. I honestly think this arc is a very very helpful and well thought out counterpoint to Feyre’s arc - almost like a harmonizing melody. Some people will deeply see themselves and feel validated in Nesta’s process of healing, and that alone makes this plot worthwhile.

About the sex: it’s spicy. Extremely spicy. If you have gotten this far in the series, I don’t know how you’d expect anything else. I’m noticing the majority of negative reviews are about too much sex. If you think this book is going to get less sexy than the rest, you are mistaken. The sex scenes are well written, and for a period of time, the only major “romantic” points in the book (this is also a symptom of some forms of trauma and common for people who struggle with connection). If sex bothers you, and you cant imagine it as a plot device or a viable way to respond to connection issues, you probably aren’t going to resonate with this book. But if you enjoy a sexy, compelling story, you’ll likely enjoy.

Now for the major problems I had with this book (BIG SPOILERS AHEAD):

Fayre and Rhysand…oh god. While they were interesting, multidimensional, sexy, just honestly fantastic characters in the previous books (I will re-read ACOMAF many, many times) they were honestly SO hard to read in this book. I understand that this book was written from the perspective of someone who doesn’t particularly like them, but even their objective actions (and when the book was from Cassian’s perspective) painted them as dull, frustrating, often domineering to the point of being disrespectful, cardboard characters.

And Rhysand was the absolute worst. Coming from someone who loves these characters, loves their arc, relates deeply to Fayre, this arc was deeply disappointing. Honestly I’d rather just forget it happened and go back to ACOMAF.

BIG BIG BIG SPOILER (please stop reading if you haven’t read this book, or if you plan to):

As someone who has had a non-viable pregnancy that could have posed serious risk to me if I didn’t find out in time…I would never, ever forgive anyone who kept me in the dark about it. Ever. And i know many women who feel the same. As an empowering book for young women, it disturbed me the entire time how the characters addressed this situation with Fayre. Especially Rhysand and Madja. I know the ida of Nesta telling Fayre about it was supposed to make the point that women should know the truth, but the way the entire thing went down just felt…so entirely wrong.

It gave me a very Twilight, Breaking Dawn vibe, except worse because at least Edward was honest with Bella from the beginning (and even worse because Fayre and Rhysand are actually well developed characters who I enjoy reading).

I was happy that it all worked out in the end, but the entire time leading up to the resolution just felt so wrong. And Fayre’s reaction to it all just felt…stiff, cardboard, idyllic wife and mother, rather than a truly wholistic person with their own feelings.

All in all, I loved Nesta’s story, loved her arc, loved the Valkyries…and WISH the Rhysand/Fayre situation had been handled in any possible way differently.

I cannot say this enough. This book is solid, I enjoyed it, but I SO wish Fayre and Rhysand had been written differently.

Holy cow I never thought I’d like Nesta as much as I do now!!!! A great enemies to lovers story, with plenty of frisky business. I must say that the book takes its sweet time getting to the action; I was genuinely confused how it was going to wrap up in time. But the ending was perfect and I can’t wait for the next one!!

At first before I started this series I was apprehensive - thinking it was going to be more fairy tale like that anything. But by the end of the first book I was absolutely hooked. I read the first 3 books in just over a week and a half (could not put them down), and the story that this author weaves and brings to life is absolutely phenomenal. The characters all have their strengths and weaknesses, and the family feeling to the group made my heart just hold on to every single chapter. The development in each one was brilliantly done, this is a series I would absolutely promote people to read - it's got action, suspense, love, horror, pretty much everything. I will be reading her other series as well excited to see what other adventures await!

I had my doubts about this book because I was so in love with Feyre and Rhys that I thought I couldn’t love Cassian and Nesta. But this book brought tears to my eyes and heartaches. I loved this book just as much as I loved the others. I am so moved by the finale that I have no words.

Reviewing any book from the esteemed ACOTAR series feels like a daunting task, especially when it comes to this astonishing, heart-rending, and utterly brilliant instalment. While I'm sure countless reviews have been penned on this tome, each perspective offers a unique insight, so here's mine.

Let's address the elephant in the room: the star rating. This book unequivocally earns five massive and brilliant stars from me. It has swiftly ascended to join the ranks of my favourites, standing shoulder to shoulder with A Court of Mist and Fury.

I'll admit, my expectations weren't sky-high for this book. The prospect of delving into the miserable and acerbic world of Nesta Archeron didn't exactly fill me with excitement. Initially, I found myself recoiling from Nesta's caustic demeanour and refusal to take accountability for her actions. In fact, I didn't want to delve into it at all, wanting to hold onto the image of Feyre and Rhysand a little bit longer. However, as Nesta's character began to evolve and unfold, my perception of her gradually softened.

Nesta's journey of growth and self-discovery is depicted through a lens of unparalleled realism. The portrayal of mental health in this narrative is nothing short of exemplary. Her healing process is anything but linear, mirroring the erratic nature of real-life struggles. The story eloquently illustrates how unhealthy coping mechanisms and self-sabotage can manifest in the face of adversity, driving home the importance of empathy and understanding.

As I delved deeper into Nesta's story and peeled back the layers of her character, I found myself relating to her character and loving her wholeheartedly. I realized that my aversion to Nesta may have stemmed from a recognition of my own shadow self within her—a revelation that has profoundly impacted me.

One of the most poignant themes of the book is the resilience of strong female characters in the face of grief and trauma. The portrayal of female camaraderie and empowerment, particularly through Nesta's relationships with Gwyn and Emerie, struck a chord with me. These bonds serve as a powerful reminder of the strength found in sisterhood.

The infusion of lots of spice, increased focus on certain characters, and incorporation of contemporary themes demonstrate Maas's responsiveness to her readership.

Now, let's talk romance. While the relationship between Nesta and Cassian may not fit the traditional romance mould, its intensity and passion are undeniable. The unabashed celebration of female sexuality and sensuality is a welcome departure from societal norms, and Nesta's unapologetic ownership of her desires is both refreshing and empowering.

That being said, I couldn't help but feel that the abundance of steamy scenes detracted somewhat from the emotional depth of the relationship. While Cassian's unwavering support undoubtedly aids in Nesta's healing, their connection occasionally feels overshadowed by physicality.

In conclusion, A Court of Silver Flames captivated me from start to finish. Its 768 pages held me rapt, and I found myself yearning for even more. This instalment is a testament to Maas's storytelling prowess, seamlessly blending steamy romance, heart-pounding action, and poignant themes of empowerment and resilience. If the next book focuses on Azriel, as I hope it does, I'll be eagerly awaiting its release. Simply put, A Court of Silver Flames delivers on every front, leaving readers craving more of this enchanting world and its captivating characters.
