— The Painter
The Painter is an NPC vendor who sells paint(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) and painting tools, as well as paintings and wallpapers(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions). He will move in once the following criteria have been met:
- There is an available vacant house.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 8 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 4 other town NPCs are in the world. Note that while the Old Man, Traveling Merchant, and town pets(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) count towards this total, the Skeleton Merchant(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) does not.[2]
The Painter's shop inventory changes based on external factors. The biome in which he is talked to, the moon phase, and seasonal events all determine which paintings and wallpapers are available.
On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, he has two shop menus: one is the default "Shop", where paint and painting tools are sold; the other is "Decor", where paintings and wallpapers are sold. If any pylon is available, it is sold in both shop menus.
On the Old-gen console version and Nintendo version, all the items are sold in a single shop menu.
On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, the Painter will attack nearby enemies with his Paintball Gun to defend himself, dealing 8 / 12 / 14 damage in Pre-Hardmode (increasing to 10 / 15 / 17 damage in Hardmode), and (on the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version) increases as players progress he will gain various stat increases.[1] The Painter also as a 1/10 (10%) chance of dropping the Paintball Gun upon death,

Shimmered form
When submerged in Shimmer, the Painter will transform into his Shimmered form. This has no impact on gameplay or dialogue and is only a visual change. He can be returned to his classic look by submerging him in Shimmer again.
Notes
- An NPC's shop window can display a maximum of 39 items. On the Old-gen console version during Christmas, the number of items the Painter can sell at once increases above 39, which can push some items off the bottom of the shop window, making them technically unobtainable during Christmas. Assuming the Painter is in a pre-Hardmode world and talked to in a Forest biome, the Sparkle Stone Wallpaper and Starlit Heaven Wallpaper will be affected by this. More wallpapers will become unavailable, going up the list, if the world is in Hardmode or the Painter is talked to in different biomes.
- On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, this is not an issue since the Painter has two shop menus. Wares are split between them to prevent his wares from being locked out of purchase due to too many items being in one shop.
- If the Painter is talked to in a converted Snow biome or Desert biome, he will sell two biome-exclusive paintings at once. For example: If the Painter is talked to in a Hallowed Desert, he will sell the paintings "The Land of Deceiving Looks" and "Secrets of the Sands" at once.
- On the Nintendo version, the painting tools and paint he would normally sell are unavailable, due to the general unavailability of paint on this version.
Tips
- It is possible to use Teleporters or the King Statue to teleport him to different biomes in order to obtain all of his paintings. Alternatively, one can change the biome he is currently staying in.
- Another method is to build a small House in each biome and wait until night. If an NPC is assigned to a House at night, and the player moves a screen away, they will suddenly pop into the House. After that, simply backtrack to the House, buy the painting, and repeat in as many biomes as desired.
- The Crimson and Corruption make this difficult due to House location requirements. The easiest way is to build valid housing on corruptible blocks such as dirt, stone or sand, then use the Clentaminator with the required evil solution to spray the area around the house until the Painter begins selling the painting. Once bought, the player can use Green Solution to purify the area again. This can also work with the Hallow if one wishes to move the Painter from their house, and can be done in pre-Hardmode with the evil powders.

- The quote "When the thunder rolls, and the lightning strikes... it really brings out the colors on the furniture." may be a reference to the song The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks.
