RAIPUR: Nineteen labourers, including three minors, lost their lives in a tragic accident in Chhattisgarh. An overcrowded speeding pickup truck plunged into a 20-ft deep pit in Kawardha district, causing casualties and injuries. Political leaders expressed condolences and pledged support for the affected families.
The incident occurred when an overcrowded speeding pickup truck, carrying 25 labourers, plunged into a 20-ft deep pit in Kawardha district of Chhattisgarh on Monday afternoon.
Eighteen of the deceased individuals were female, while one was male.
According to Kawardha district Superintendent of Police Dr Abhishek Pallava, all of them were on their way back home after plucking tendu leaves. Additionally, four labourers sustained injuries in the accident. The mishap took place near Bahpani village in the Kukdur police station area of Kawardha district.
The Superintendent of Police stated that 13 labourers lost their lives at the accident site. Additionally, six of the injured individuals passed away while receiving treatment. He mentioned that among the injured individuals, three were female and one was male.
The deceased have been identified as Bismat Bai aged 45, Lila Bai aged 35, Parsadiya Bai aged 30, Bharti aged 13, Sunti Bai aged 45, and Mila Bai aged 48.
Tiku Bai is 40 years old. Sirdari is 45 years old. Janiya Bai is 35 years old. Mungiya Bai is 60 years old. Jhamlo Bai is 62 years old. Siya Bai is 30 years old. Kiran is 15 years old. Patorin Bai is 35 years old. Dhanaiya Bai is 48 years old. Shanti Bai is 35 years old. Pyari Bai is 40 years old. Sonam Bai is 16 years old.

The injured individuals have been identified as Munni Bai aged 45, Dhanbai aged 52, Mamta aged 22, and Gulab Singh aged 50.
Locals contradicted the police claims. They stated that there were 30 to 35 people in the pickup during the accident. They suspect brake failure as the cause.
Local villagers arrived promptly to assist the injured individuals immediately following the accident.
Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Arun Sao stated that the pickup vehicle fell into the pit due to a brake failure. “Around 30 labourers were returning home in the pickup vehicle when the mishap occurred,” he said.
Chhattisgarh home minister Vijay Sharma and Kawardha SP Dr Abhishek Pallava reached the accident site to evaluate the situation. They mentioned that an investigation will be conducted, and appropriate actions will be taken to support the families of the deceased and the injured individuals.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, and Congress state president Deepak Baij expressed deep condolences for the death of the labourers.
