Baltimore bridge collapse: Cargo ship Dali leaves for Virginia after 3 months of unfortunate incident
Cargo ship Dali departed from Baltimore to Virginia on Monday morning, nearly three months after it lost power and collided with a supporting column of the Francis Scott Key bridge, causing it to collapse.
The unfortunate incident occurred on March 26, shortly after the Dali left the Port of Baltimore, when it lost power and propulsion, and ultimately collided with one of the bridge's supporting columns.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of six construction workers.
It is anticipated that the ship will reach Virginia's Norfolk in about 16 to 20 hours, where the remaining containers will be removed and additional repairs will be carried out.
The vessel was successfully refloated and guided back to port on May 20 after being stuck amidst the wreckage for nearly two months, with a large steel truss draped over its damaged bow.
Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board discovered that the ship had experienced two power outages in the hours leading up to its departure from the Port of Baltimore in its investigation.
The vessel lost power once again and veered off course just before the bridge collapsed. The agency is still looking into the causes of the electrical failures. Additionally, the FBI has initiated a criminal investigation into the incident.

Last week, a federal judge confirmed an agreement that allowed the crew members of the Dali to return home. Since the crash, none of the crew had been permitted to leave the United States. However, the agreement stipulates that the crew members can go back to their home countries but must be available for depositions when required.
The collapse has had a significant impact on the livelihoods of thousands of longshoremen, truckers, and small business owners. As a result, local and state officials have prioritized reopening the port and restoring its traffic to normal capacity, hoping to alleviate the economic ripple effects caused by the incident.
The authorities have stated their intention to rebuild the bridge by 2028.
