On the identification problem of the infrared "Keenan bands" in S stars.
Abstract
On the basis of a medium-resolution near infrared spectrogram of the S star R Cyg and laboratory spectra of BaF, BaCl and NbO the identification problem of the so-called Keenan (1950, 1957) bands - appearing in S stars - is reviewed. These three molecules - previously suggested as responsible for the Keenan bands - are, however, ruled out as major contributors. A number of previously unknown bandheads of NbO in the spectral region 7800-8800 A are listed. On the other hand, the (0,0) band of CrH with a head at 8611.1 A precisely matches one of the Keenan bands, but a somewhat higher resolution spectrogram is needed for a line-by-line identification.
