The role of general relativity in astronomy - Retrospect and prospect
Abstract
Past confirmations of the general theory of relativity by the three classical tests are reviewed, and attention is given to the role which general relativity plays in our understanding of the large-scale structure of the universe (i.e., in the realm of cosmology). The nature of gravitational collapse as a central problem in astronomy is discussed along with the author's considered prospects for general relativity in astronomy.
