Allan G. Sanford Gorilla Sanctuary
The Gorilla Foundation is establishing a unique sanctuary for gorillas on west Maui, Hawaii-the first gorilla sanctuary outside of Africa. The tropical climate will be much more suitable for the gorillas than our present location in Northern California. We will develop a large, secluded sanctuary on 70 acres provided by the Maui Land and Pineapple Company. The plan calls for gorillas being able to roam freely within spacious enclosures, spending their days socializing, napping in the sun, playing, foraging through edible vegetation, communicating (some in sign language), reproducing and raising their children.
We will provide a state-of-the-art, safe, secure and secluded enclosed outdoor habitat and indoor facilities designed primarily for the gorillas-with on-site residences for our staff members to be near the gorillas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round.
