The United Nations General Assembly convened a
special session in Geneva in June-July 2000 to assess the achievements made at the Social Summit
of Copenhagen and to discuss new initiatives.

Division for Social Policy and Development serves as the focal point
within the UN for
follow-up to the Summit and the special session. This includes
supporting and encouraging Governments, civil society, the private sector
and UN agencies in implementing the agreements reached. A recent
report shows that significant follow-up activities are underway in all

At Geneva, United Nations member countries made a new commitment to eradicate poverty, address
unemployment and promote social integration. After intense debate, they also agreed on
