Juiced leaves little room for driver error in a high-end street racing environment

Think you have what it takes to be a top street racer? Care to put your cash, or pink slip, where your mouth is?

Juiced is THQ’s pending street-race title that banks upon reputation off the track, and then skill on the streets when you put it all on the line in a no-holds-barred, no-quarter-given race. THQ put a preview build up for a little hands-on action at a Gamer's Day event in San Francisco January 26.

The game is tight, both in terms of the graphics and the controls. The AI also is not above leaving you in the dust. In the build available at THQ’s Gamer’s Day, smart driving was not the only skill a driver needed – daring was also required. You had to take risks; if not, you would fall behind and catching up was very hard to do. The game’s controls also did not leave a lot of room for error.

While an on-screen prompt would caution to slow down for the upcoming corner, going in a little fast meant hitting the brake, which in turn grabbed and almost brought the car to a standstill. Using the handbrake to powerslide around the corners was also not an option. If anything, the handbrake was tighter than the disk brakes, and killed momentum even faster.

The game really has several elements that seem generic to the genre – in terms of the set-up to the race and the controls. The spectators in this build were a little flat, even though getting a good look at them was not really possible unless you met the wall and had to reverse to get back on course. That aside, though, this game is sterling in the graphics department. The cars do not appear to take much physical damage during the race, but post-race, you can expect to spend time in the repair shop.

Juiced is the type of racing game – well, at this point in time at least – that is for the serious racing fan. The controls are tight, there is little room for error and the game tone is what you make of it. And you do that with proof on the track.
