Hot Wheels has always been about the tricks on the extreme tracks that everyone is familiar with, but these stunts aren't the same.

Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge is a racing game that is heavy on the stunts. Each of the events features using stunts, whether it's a race or straight stunt challenge.

The main mode is the Game Show mode, where players will need to successfully finish three stunt challenges and two championship races in six different levels. Here is where the race tracks and vehicles are unlocked. To begin with, players have one car and one track available, a dinosaur themed track. The track isn't very difficult to maneuver, and the hairpin turns are kept to a minimum. The key to outracing the other cars is to do tricks on each ramp, garnering points that increase the booster speed of the car. The tricks are pretty simple, and mainly consist of rolling the car over to the right or the left, and flipping it from end to end. Multiple tricks can be performed for more points, which equates to more speed.

Other modes are the Stunt School, where players can practice their moves, Arcade mode, for a quick race fix, a Champions League mode for those that savor a challenge, and Multiplayer mode, where players can take turns racing and comparing times. In Arcade mode, only the tracks that have been unlocked in the Game Show mode are available in the Quick Race and Test Track.

This is a pretty decent racing game, with controls that feel good and responsive. The tracks aren't unduly hard, and the only difficulty is beating out all the other racers to finish first. Therein lies the main problem with this game, that the requirements to unlock the tracks and vehicles are too high. The player has to be first in most of the races, in order to advance. Not second, first. This is rather harsh for what is basically a kid's game. As there is only one track available at first, and they have to be first in order to win the challenge, they're doomed to race the one track over and over again if they're unable to win the race.

Contrasted against the possible monotony of getting stuck on one track because of bad driving, there are a lot of different types of racing modes and features in this game, however, many of these are still limited to unlocked tracks. Kids can race their car around a test track without competing against other cars in the Test Track section of the Arcade mode, but this is again limited to just the tracks that have been unlocked.

The cars and tracks all look good, but the opposing cars appear a little pixelated while racing. The tracks are detailed nicely to match each particular theme and feature rich lighting effects. The music is forgettable, despite the attempt to match the theme of "hip racin' dude" that the main kid narrator portrays.

Again, this is a decent racing game, but not that one that stands above the crowd in any significant way. There aren't enough available tracks in the beginning, plus different difficulty levels should have been offered. The stunts are bland, to say the least, which is strange for a game that is based on performing stunts. The good features of this game are the tight controls of the cars and stunts, and the variety of racing modes and the multiplayer mode.

This game is worth a look if the kids are really into Hot Wheels, or want a racing game they don't already have, but others may want to opt for a more exciting experience in racing.

Reviewer's Scoring Details

Gameplay: 6
The game isn't very exciting to play, and while not overly difficult, some kids may get frustrated over not being able to finish first in the first challenge in Game Show mode, which means no new tracks. The tricks are kept simple to perform, which is good, but it seems to me that more types of tricks could still have been offered with the same ease of control. The tracks and the actual racing are designed well, though.

Graphics: 7
The game looks fairly good, and compares well to other games on the GBA graphically speaking.

Sound: 6
Wholly forgettable music.

Difficulty: Medium
The game isn't that hard, but the requirement to finish first out of the pack could present problems to some.

Concept: 6
There is nothing new in this racing game.

Multiplayer: 7

Overall: 6.3
An adequately designed racing game that delivers on the technical front, but one that just isn't very deep or exciting.
